McConnell and Reid may have just set a 51-vote threshold for passing Obamacare repeal
Washington Examiner ^ | July 24, 2015 | Timothy P. Carney

Posted on 07/24/2015 11:17:28 PM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

Next week, Senate Republicans could pass Obamacare repeal with a simple 51-vote majority as part of the long-term highway bill, according to Sen. Mike Lee.

The Utah Republican laid out the argument in a press release after party leaders set the sequencing of votes:

"The first Obamacare vote on Sunday will have a 60 vote threshold, and Democrats will likely block it," Lee continued. "But thanks to the sequencing of the votes we just locked in, Republicans will have the opportunity resurrect that Obamacare amendment later on in the process, and put it back before the Senate in a manner that only requires a simple-majority vote."

After cloture is reached on the Export-Import Bank amendment, senators will still be allowed to offer germane amendments to the highway bill, each of which would only require a simple-majority to pass. If the Chair rules that the Obamacare amendment is non-germane, Senate Rule 22 also allows any senator to appeal that ruling to the full Senate. At that point, a simple-majority of Senators would have the power to add the Obamacare repeal amendment to the highway bill.

If Lee is correct, then Democrats, in order to save Obamacare, would need to kill the highway bill — and thus their effort to restart the expired Export-Import Bank. (Unless, of course, Republicans bail Democrats out and sink the repeal efforts.)

“And the moment someone did, positive results flowed. Sure as night follows day. Imagine our surprise that we were considered kooks that would destroy conservatism and give Barry more power.”

In the mean time, let him smash some ugly things that needed smashing.

Americans are very, very good at cleaning up and building something better. But you gotta bulldoze the slum before you build something beautiful to replace it.

“...40 years.” I think you are overly optimistic of the US public. Approx 1/3 are cool-aid drinkers, over half receive some sort of payment from the government (deserved, or not), and almost half the voting eligible populace doesn’t even show up to cast a ballot. This country is getting what, and will continue to get, exactly what it deserves until those three things change.

Along with the crack whores, the group includes the sanctimonious self righteousists that value their own very narrow views more highly than the good of the country

“Now, a good chunk of Trump’s voters are also Reagan Democrats, and there’s no evidence that Cruz will be able to reel those voters in for himself.”

Bingo, and therein lies the electoral conundrum for conservatives. Willard was essentially right when he made his 47% comments. He was also stupid in couching them in the terms he did, and more importantly NOT HAVING A CLUE AS TO HOW TO CHANGE IT! He didn’t give thought one to figuring out a way to make that 47% say 35%. He was liberal, and he was incompetent to boot.

One of the things I do like about DT is that he does bring a negotiators perspective to things. He’s looking to make a deal. And sometimes you have to be very creative and bring things that no one thought about into the mix. Unfortunately very few politicians bring that perspective to things. They’re squabbling over their piece of the spoils, not looking at the bigger picture.

And who is going to change them? Unless and until someone gets creative, we will continue to preach and ever aging choir.

This is a lot of hot air and legislative mumbo jumbo. Everyone Knows that Obama would veto anything that repeals Obamacare.

There are 53 Republican Senators. This means there are at least 2 turncoats. Any guesses who they are?

Can there phones be lit up with calls?

Show vote. It will be vetoed and the R’s don’t have to votes to override it. McWeasal knows this and that is why it is happening.

RKBA:
"And who is going to change them?"

The best solution I see is that we all hope that enough voters (democrat & republican alike) will have now seen the light and have now realized exactly how bad obamacare is and thus -they will always make sure to get out and vote - in big numbers- for conservative candidates - in all future elections or they (we) will be in the same quagmire again - - as we're in now.

A lot to hope for.

obamacare is not about to be repealed. The Republican Party will not allow it. All this noise about repealing it is baloney pure and simple. It is just to pacify the sheep. The Republicans had their chance to repeal[defund actually] it and refused . Anytime their sheep get restless, a Republican politician will either say, “I am going to repeal obamacare!” or say “I will introduce a Bill to repeal obamacare”! And the sheep will calm down.

A majority of 2/3 of each House is necessary to attain obamacare repeal. This ploy is just to get the Ex-Im bank rechartered.

I heard Senator Paul will join the wrecking crew tomorrow. He told Hannity that people should watch Cspan Sunday . I now see what they are doing. The simply have a rule to file Germane amendments. If they are over ruled as non Germane then the full senate can define germane. We just need 51 votes!! This is so great. We will see where the Rino’s stand. Obama care is absolutely germane to the highway bill because they both screw the tax payer.
