NRA version of 2nd Amendment lacks common sense
Chicago Tribune ^ | June 5, 2015 | David McGrath

A new Pew Research Center report states that 52 percent of Americans support gun rights, the highest percentage in the last two decades. Yet the gun rights that they believe are guaranteed by law may very well be an illusion..

That's because we have allowed lawyers instead of language professionals to interpret the Constitution of the United States.

Ask any high school English teacher to parse the Second Amendment, and they will say that it does not prohibit common-sense restrictions on the purchase and possession of guns, in spite of the National Rifle Association's claim to the contrary. The proof lies in the amendment's exact language — "A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."

Literally, it means that the American people will retain the right to carry weapons as members of a state militia in order to safeguard their freedom.

Okay Professor...I guess the Founding Fathers were ignorant to proper grammar, therefore, their ideas, regardless of their intent is to be ignored due to your assessment of sentence structure and other faux paux...

Guess you need to go get a bunch of yer guys and come and take all our guns away, since it was never intended for us to have them in the first place because they didn’t write it up correctly...

Lemme know how that works out for ya...

I did pretty good, excuse me; rather well, in English; so I'm going to throw this out there:
commonsense restrictions on the purchase and possession of guns = infringement. Adding the words "common sense" does not make it any less of a rights violation.

“Ask any high school English teacher to parse the Second Amendment”
Ask any liberal government school union teacher and they would parse it to mean teacher pensions need to be doubled.

Right to abortion.
Right to healthcare.
Right to water.
Right to internet.
Right to food.
Right to a “fair” wage.
Right to education.
Right to gay marriage.
Right to sex change operations.

-None of these things appear in the US Constitution.
But liberals keep telling me they do.

No it does NOT mean that the state has a right to form a militia. The right of the PEOPLE, means the individual person every time it is used in the Constitution.

No it doesn't. And anyone attempting to sell that tripe is too stupid to carry on a serious conversation.

Col.MacCormak (sp?) would have blown up the Tribune Tower ages ago.

The parsing is correct, the understanding of history is not. Whebn the 2nd amendment was drawn, All males, 16 to 60 or some such age were the militia and expected to provide their own firearm of a common pattern.

That makes no sense at all. There would be no need for an amendment on that basis.
