I remember the righteous smugness I used to feel when the one conservative friend in my social circle would begin expressing his opinions at a dinner gathering. I and the other enlightened diners would shift uncomfortably and glance at one another, rolling our eyes: "Here he goes again." My stomach would tighten with a worry not fit for the occasion. I began to feel personally offended. And the smugness sometimes boiled over into anger, as I'd listen to my friend, loyal and kind, simply share his "crazy" ideas and opinions with us.
What I thought then was only my frustration with his views, I know now was also my own discomfort with my belief it was okay to dismiss and condemn him for expressing himself. We ganged up on him. And while he didnt like it(who would?),he took it well, and eventually the conversation would drift into safer territory like work and sports, and all would be forgotten.
Oftentimes after these dinners I was left thinking (no pun intended), that this guy was one of the smartest, nicest people I knew, and all he was trying to do was offer another angle on things. He was sharing a voice that wasn't that of an echoing lemming skirting over issues in search of a choir, but rather an informed, passionate, and to us, provocative perspective we were all uneasy with. And again, I could feel in my gut that I hadnt been fair or nice. But wait, aren't us liberals supposed to be nice and sensitive and open? I mean, if the basic meaning of the word liberal is to advocate the freedom of the individual, why then is there such hell to pay for those who dont agree with the Lefts political or social views?
Why the defensiveness? Why the arrogance? Why the hostility?....

It's a good description of how the Left reacts to those who don't buy into their group-think - and boy 'o boy if you ever leave the fold, you're going to be shunned.
He will be happier and more content, except when he has to listen to his liberal friends.
Eventually he will realize he has no genuine liberal “friends”.
I have no liberal friends. They left me. Their choices.
Liberals dont do civilization well.
I could write an encyclopedia on how that works.
Jesus Christ: You cant impeach Him and He aint gonna resign.
Anyone ever notice how liberals say they are all about family, but then turn around and want to kill babies and take a child away from someone who could have adopted that child. What a bunch of hypocrites and vipers!
I have some relatives with that same smugness.
....."Conservatives who think progressives are misinformed idealists will forever be blind-sided by the malice of the leftby the cynicism of those who pride themselves on principle, by the viciousness of those who champion sensitivity, by the intolerance of those who call themselves liberal, and by the ruthless disregard for the well-being of the downtrodden by those who preen themselves as social saints."..
“I have some relatives with that same smugness.”
I sure do.
My best friend is a democrat. We somehow hitted our relationship right off by talking politics. We had real intensive talks concerning our points of view and we finally came to the conclusion that friendship was more important than being destroyed by politics. Now, my friend and his wife are not going to vote for the spook in the Scooby bus, but for a republican, and its not going to be Bush. He like me can’t stand Bush.
Thanks for this. Was just having a conversation with my teen daughters on the “idiots” at school. “So he said that Bush was friends with Osama bin Ladin, but then went against him. Bush created Osama bin Ladin”. I asked him if he was an idiot. Next time I’m going to punch him.”
I tried to get across how you can’t do that, and it won’t help. You need to present a reasoned argument. Of course that is tough to do when people just spew stuff, and you are only 17 years old and don’t know the Afghan/Soviet history. (I tried to explain the best I could).
She did send an email to one of her teachers that told the story of how Jesus turned some girl into an owl for not giving Him bread. (I’m guessing that is from the fake book of Thomas). And she already had emailed another teacher that said “Palin said she can see Russia from her house.”
It is really sad that these teachers are so indoctrinated and SOOOOO stupid. BTW- these teachers are going on a one-day walkout. I showed my kids the law that says that is illegal.
Also showed them where their history teacher makes $79,000 a year (well - a school year), compared to the national median of about $55,000 (which is lower than what it was in 2008). And they want a “cost of living” increase. Even though they agreed to a contract without it.
(oops - got off topic.)
It’s encouraging that your daughter is interested in government and understands (frustrating as it is) that there are those with opposing, uninformed ideas - often in a position of power and with a platform to spread them.
Too many just find it easier, less stressful, not to engage or *think* about history or politics.
She’ll work her way through this briar patch with your guidance and become an asset not a liability to her community.
Good work.
I had a friend who as time went on got offended at things I said, which I was not trying to do, I was just trying to discuss something. Even t times when I consciously tried to keep things uncontroversial, things would not go well. She wanted certain things to be off-limits to talk about. I envisioned a future of more and more things we would not be able to talk about. I said that aas not what an honest friendship was aBout, and that friends are suposed to be people that you can be gourself around and not have to walk on eggshells. She decided to drop me as a friend.
Thank you LV!
: )
I didn’t know about the Facebook of Thomas. Oh, fake book...
Never mind. :)
Otherwise, great post. I have liberal friends and liberal enemies—both groups serve a purpose. I don’t condemn people for being liberal, but my wife says I’m not nice when I argue. Sometimes, facts can be as hard as rocks. LOL
People on the Left feel entitled to give their opinion (and state opinions as facts) - to freely speak about politics and define others, but a conservative is mean-spirited and a pain in the neck when they give their views.
A lot of people just clam up to avoid the “fight.”
For me, the shelf-life on redemption has been exceeded. I want the sky to split open.

I’m a Ronald Reagan-style Conservative. But, in all fairness, I must say this: Yes, the Ultra-Left Liberals are vile, mean-spirited and vindictive. However, the same can be said for some of our Ultra-Right Conservative brothers and sisters as well. Even here on this website; if you dare to disagree with them on any one point or veer one iota from their “Purist Doctrine” they will chew you up, spit you out and then label you as a “troll” or “DU plant” so all of their “Purist” friends can ostracize you as well. I’m thinking that “People who live in glass houses......”
