Thanks for this. Was just having a conversation with my teen daughters on the “idiots” at school. “So he said that Bush was friends with Osama bin Ladin, but then went against him. Bush created Osama bin Ladin”. I asked him if he was an idiot. Next time I’m going to punch him.”
I tried to get across how you can’t do that, and it won’t help. You need to present a reasoned argument. Of course that is tough to do when people just spew stuff, and you are only 17 years old and don’t know the Afghan/Soviet history. (I tried to explain the best I could).
She did send an email to one of her teachers that told the story of how Jesus turned some girl into an owl for not giving Him bread. (I’m guessing that is from the fake book of Thomas). And she already had emailed another teacher that said “Palin said she can see Russia from her house.”
It is really sad that these teachers are so indoctrinated and SOOOOO stupid. BTW- these teachers are going on a one-day walkout. I showed my kids the law that says that is illegal.
Also showed them where their history teacher makes $79,000 a year (well - a school year), compared to the national median of about $55,000 (which is lower than what it was in 2008). And they want a “cost of living” increase. Even though they agreed to a contract without it.
(oops - got off topic.)
It’s encouraging that your daughter is interested in government and understands (frustrating as it is) that there are those with opposing, uninformed ideas - often in a position of power and with a platform to spread them.
Too many just find it easier, less stressful, not to engage or *think* about history or politics.
She’ll work her way through this briar patch with your guidance and become an asset not a liability to her community.
Good work.
I didn’t know about the Facebook of Thomas. Oh, fake book...
Never mind. :)
Otherwise, great post. I have liberal friends and liberal enemies—both groups serve a purpose. I don’t condemn people for being liberal, but my wife says I’m not nice when I argue. Sometimes, facts can be as hard as rocks. LOL
Your children are lucky to have such an informed parent willing to share knowledge.
