US Intel. scraps Iran, Hezbollah from terrorist threats lists [Beirut Marine Alert]
Iran Times ^ | March 16, 2015 | n/a

The US National Intelligence has removed Iran and the Lebanese resistance movement, Hezbollah, from its list of "terrorist threats."

US Director of National Intelligence James Clapper scrapped Iran and Hezbollah from the list in an annual report recently delivered to the US Senate, citing their efforts in fighting terrorists, including the ISIL Takfiri group, Press TV reported.

The unclassified version of the report titled “Worldwide Threat Assessment of the US Intelligence Communities,” which was released on February 26, 2015, noted Iran’s efforts to battle extremists, including those of the ISIL terrorist group, who were perceived to constitute the greatest terrorist threat to American interests worldwide.

Highlighting Iran’s regional role, the report pointed to the Islamic Republic’s “intentions to dampen sectarianism, build responsive partners, and deescalate tensions with Saudi Arabia.”

Iran has “overarching strategic goals of enhancing its security, prestige, and regional influence [that] have led it to pursue capabilities to meet its civilian goals,” the report said.

The report also said that Hezbollah is countering ISIL Takfiri terrorists in Syria and Iraq.

The ISIL Takfiri terrorists have taken control of swathes of territory in Iraq and Syria since last year.

Iran has repeatedly stressed that it will not interfere militarily in Iraq and Syria, but the Islamic Republic continues to provide support to both countries against ISIL in the form of defense consultation and humanitarian aid.

Did our compliant “intelligence community” find a way to scrap the outhouse from terrorist threat lists, yet?

My biggest beef with Reagan is that he didn’t have the balls to go after Hezbollah....

At the time I felt the same, but eventually I came to see that Reagan was acting like he did because he had a bigger goal in sight: Soviet Russia. The risk of getting bogged down in Lebanon could have derailed his main policies.

The subsequent administrations did not have that excuse, because by then Reagan had removed the Soviet threat.

Didn’t they listen to Netanyahu or did they just don’t understand the man. In his speech to the Congress he said that “sometimes the enemy of my enemy is - my enemy!”

The fact that Hezbollah is fighting ISIS does not make them any less interested in terrorizing the West. At the moment they may have their hands full, but remember that the PA (or some of its many sub-groups) sometimes carry out terror attacks againt Israel just because Hamas has done so. Very likely that Hezbollah and ISIS will compete who can cause the worst mayhem for the West.

The administration must have missed that intel briefing. Actually we all need to go into the how-do-we-allow-Iran-to-form-a-caliphate mode and then we will understand the decisions being made in the outhouse. I was surprised when they admitted to leaving 16k of our boots in the stan instead of an all out.

It’s not a secret that Weinberger didn’t like Jews, and resented the frequent assumptions that he was one. Pat Buchanan was also influential with Reagan about this time.

Oh, so now we are friends with Iran? That happened fast. I guess holding hostages and killing marines is all forgiven?

Quite a few of the men I was with were there when the barracks was bombed. They seemed to have some guilt that they survived while others didn’t. Reagan not unleashing us on Hezbollah is my one beef I had with him. We could have teamed up with the Israelis and wiped Hezbollah out.

I was there and used to have the same frustration as you with President Reagan. But now I believe that Reagan came to realize that he erred by putting us there in the first place and decided not to compound his mistake. Withdrawing was probably the best option Reagan had at that point.

Beirut was an impossible military mission that was doomed to fail. Americans can be hunters or hunted, but can never be seen as impartial peacekeepers. Within three months, BLT 1/8 and 24th MAU were in a shooting war with artillery and naval gunfire, and we lost any remaining claim to our "peacekeeping" mission when we fired over 300 rounds of naval gunfire in one day to save the Lebanese Army from slaughter at Suq al Gharb. Five weeks later we were slaughtered while still pretending to be "peacekeepers." 265 young Marines, sailors and soldiers were trained to fight but died for absolutely nothing. And now I'm old and gray.

An awesome book about Beirut is “The Root” which I’ve read several times. It tells the story from the Marine on the ground. Very powerful book.

Eric Hammel is an excellent military historian. Like many who were there, I sat with Eric for several hours as he researched the material for The Root. It was a dark chapter in our history.
