Georgia Judge Jails Muslim Woman For Wearing Headscarf To Court • Two women barred from entering courtroom in recent days

Daniel Nasaw in Washington

A city judge in Georgia has in the past eight days barred two Muslim women wearing Islamic headscarves from entering his courtroom, jailing one, and prompting an inquiry from the civil rights office at the US department of justice.

Judge Keith Rollins of Douglasville, Georgia, yesterday ordered Lisa Valentine, 41, to jail after she refused to remove her scarf before entering the courtroom, citing rules governing appropriate dress. Last week, Sabreen Abdulrahmaan was forced to leave Rollins's court before her son's probation hearing because she would not remove her scarf.

"It's a religious right," Valentine said. "It's our constitutional right that we can have our religious practices, no matter if it's a courtroom or not. He's supposed to be handing out justice, not taking away civil rights."

Valentine said she sought to accompany her nephew to a traffic hearing yesterday but was told by a court security officer that she could not enter the courtroom with her headscarf on. She said she refused to remove it and turned to leave, saying, "This is bullshit".

Precedent— FL Drivers License case— did not allow woman’s photo id with burka/face cover in place... DUH!!

France outlawed the burka, believe.

Having read the Quran, I can offer this wisdom...there is a complete and absolute waiver within it to do whatever is required to live amongst the unpure or unbelievers (those of us who aren’t Islam). It basically allows you to eat pork, skip prayers, and do whatever is necessary in real life. Obviously, this woman wants to pretend she’s prep’ed up on the Quran, but she isn’t.

Sorry, Missy Muslim, but what you practice is no religion. It is a socio-political system masquerading as a religion. No constitutional protections apply.

Just stating what I wish congress would recognize.

Madam, The Court will ask you one more time, and for the last time ,”Would you please take those rags off your head in my courtroom?” Thank you in advance, for your compliance!
As far as I know, in the Courtroom, The Judge is King for the duration of the courtroom session, and he does have that ability to set dress code specifications.

So if she’s allowed to wear a headscarf to a courtroom, does this mean others can wear their baseball caps, beanies, etc. as well?

Just askin......

Are saying by the same logic the judge could have a Jewish defendant’s yarmulke removed?

Is a headscarf actually mandated by the Koran?

On what grounds did he make her remove it?

If this judge can do this, it will be used against Christians very soon.

Have you ever visited a moslem country? I have, several times.Including two located on the Arabian Peninsula. They have rules there...including rules about dress...that apply to moslems and "infidels" alike.

Would you say a Jewish man should be forbidden from wearing a Kipah in court?

She was there with her son in traffic court. She wasn’t wearing a burka, just the head scarf, I don’t believe her face was covered. The court room is not a Temple and the judge is not a God. He’s just a government employee with the power to destroy lives.

I agree with you on this case. She was only there for her nephew, she was not a defendant or a plaintiff facing the Judge. It’s not like she was wearing a Burka, total face covered, etc.

Would this judge have asked a Jew to remove his yarmulka?
