The film 50 Shades of Grey is likely to be financially successful no matter what. The filmwhich is likely the first part of a new franchiseis an adaptation of the unbelievably popular E.L. James novel.
Few wouldve guessed a few short years ago that there was a huge untapped market for this type of story, which originated as Twilight fan fiction. But there undeniably was a big market for this. Millions and millions and millions of copies were sold. The book became a massive bestseller and the new cinematic adaptation of it will likely dominatepardon the punthe box office this weekend.
Its unfortunate though that this movie, which superficially sounds intriguing, never tries to exert anything of depth into the shallow story. For those who havent read the books, the storys main character is Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson), a painfully naïve college student, tasked with interviewing Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan), a wealthy Washington billionaire.
Were led to believe that Anastasia is smart despite how in every scene, she seems overwhelmed by everything that happens to her. (When she walks into Greys huge office, she falls in the doorway as if shes never walked in a straight line before). For someone with life experience, she also doesnt know how to interact with others, a situation that is on display when she interviews Grey and stumbles over every question she asks. Shes like a deer in the headlights who, when one car passes her, rushes to be in front of another one.
Grey, meanwhile, is a control freak. Its easy to see that because every other line he utters focuses on how hes the master of his own universe. I exercise control in all things, Ms. Steele, he says. A few seconds later, he notes, Im used to getting my own way. A few minutes pass. Im here because Im capable of leaving you alone.
When a little later, he notes hes a dominant, it comes as no surprise. Its like Hannibal Lecter announcing at the end of Silence of the Lambs that hes a cannibal. Of course he is. The question is: is he anything more than that one thing? Grey isnt.
Of course, the story proceeds from there as the dominant Grey seduces the naïve and vulnerable Steele. The idea is that this is supposed to be sexy anddare I say itromantic. (Considering the fact that the movie comes out Valentines Day weekend and the holiday has been a prominent part of Universals marketing campaign, its undeniable that romance is supposed to be a key part of this equation). Yet, theres nothing sexy or romantic about this relationship. In fact, its quite boring.
Grey chases Steele around. Steele pushes him away. Grey seduces her. Steele pushes him away. Grey buys her things. The story beats just repeat over and over again.
If youre wondering if there are other characters in the film, I was too. Loosely speaking, other characters do appear as the story drags on. Luke Grimes appears as Greys brother. Oscar winner Marcia Gay Harden has a cameo as his mother. Victor Rasuk has a role as Steeles obnoxious friend who secretly longs for her. I would note the names of these characters here but the movie treats like more like props than as actual people. Pretending they have personalities or add to the plot would be like bringing attention to one of the plants that sits in Greys office.
The plant just sits there and so do these characters.
Its inevitable that the movie Fifty Shades of Grey will be controversial. Its subject matter is risky; its main relationship is defined by Greys oftentimes-violent sexual fantasies. Its also disconcerting that this movie is the Valentines Day movie of 2015. But despite all of the controversies about its subject, this film stands alone as a cinematic catastrophe.
Many people will likely see it because it exists. They wont see it because they think itll be good. It isnt. In fact, theres no shading or hiding the fact that this is one of the worst movies of the year.
I figuratively puke on our culture. It is utterly false, depraved, and grotesque. Nothing but some form of sodomy, 24/7.
this movie is probably just a set up to verify that Feminist’s view of men is true so that their emasculation campaign toward men can continue:

“It is utterly false, depraved, and grotesque.”
Actually, it’s shallow, mundane, and pathetic. Our culture is kind of a joke at this point, kind of the national equivalent of the movie Spinal Tap. If it weren’t for the fact that many died to preserve America, and that we have innocent children who are being affected by what we’re becoming, I would have a hard time not just laughing at us.
American culture has devolved down into nothing short of sheer poison. Degenerate swill for a degenerate people.
It's about as new as a pet rock.
Tiazinha: (I found a "safe" image...)
Nobody said it was new. It is degenerative to society
This should put everything in perspective:

I hope she didn’t buy her dominatrix outfits off the same rack at Goodwill as that blouse.
If Grey is portrayed as some kind of ideal romantic partner to women, even when he tortures and humiliates women, then why are they so upset about Epstein and Cosby?
What a massive disconnect between reality and Hollywood fantasy...
Female LIVs have snapped up the book, and now they will flock to the movie. After, they will continue to complain about sexism in society, Bill Cosby, and the culture of rape on college campuses.
Thanks to the new morality and alternative lifestyles of the secular humanism worldview of pluralism, subjectivism, and relativism.
Given the book sales figures, there must be some appeal if even on a fantasy level for a lot of women. Not sure that will translate into movie dollars though.
It is because we have a 1st Amendment that champions personal rights without restrictions, obligations nor responsibilities. It was written by righteous men for righteous men.
It is a blank check in terms of moral values.
Who am I judge? I am not judging anything — I am just observing.
IMHO it isn’t even that good of a book. Maybe there is something there to the story, I don’t know. After literally falling asleep for the third time while trying to read it, I gave up. Wife said “oh, but you didn’t get to the good parts yet.” Sorry, but wading through poorly written blather isn’t my idea of engaging entertainment, good parts or no. I have zero interest in trying to get through the book, and less than zero in seeing the movie.
