Donald Trump says Ted Cruz’s Canadian birth “could be a difficult problem” for 2016 bid
The Dallas Morning News ^ | January 23, 2015 | Todd J. Gillman

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – Billionaire Donald Trump, the most prominent “birther” to question Barack Obama’s eligibility to serve as president, asserted Friday that Sen. Ted Cruz must clear up legal doubts about his own eligibility due to his birth outside the United States.

“It’s a problem. It could be a difficult problem, but he admits that he was born in Canada,” Trump told reporters in Iowa on the eve of the first major gathering of 2016 presidential hopefuls.

“He’s a friend of mine. I have great respect for him. But …certainly it’s a stumbling block and he’s going to have to have it solved before he goes too far,” Trump said.

Cruz was born in Calgary, Alberta, on Dec. 22, 1970, while his parents worked in the Canadian oil patch. His mother is a native-born American. His father, a Cuban émigré who later became a naturalized American, was still a Cuban citizen at the time.

Cruz’s birth in Canada was never a secret. But it has proven a political liability, with detractors occasionally taunting him as “Canadian Ted,” and critics suggesting that his birth outside the United States makes him ineligible to run for president.

In August 2013, The Dallas Morning News reported that the circumstances of his birth made him both a Canadian and an American. The dual citizenship came as a surprise to Cruz and his parents, and the senator quickly vowed to shed his Canadian citizenship. That became official last June.

For Trump, that’s not yet good enough if Cruz wants to run for and become president....

Natural born citizenship means entitled to the privileges of citizenship by circumstances of birth (as opposed to a pledge, which is called being “naturalized.”)

If the possibly after-the-fact Hawaiian birth record of Barack Obama counts, then Cruz’s circumstances certainly count.

Nice try, but your own country can make anyone a citizen by statute. For instance, Congress COULD pass a law that confers citizenship on all French citizens born on a plane en route to the U.S. It’s an extreme example to prove this point: Citizens can obtain their citizenship based o. Statute, or based on DEFINITION. ALL that matters with regard to the term “natural born” is WHAT DID THAT PHRASE MEAN WHEN IT WAS USED AT THE TIME THE CONSTITUTION WAS ADOPTED.

In a day when the Constitution is expected to be read through modern mores, that horse has fled the barn. There isn’t any “God” here to insist on a perpetual unchanged covenant. This is an agreement among men.

If Barack’s purported Hawaiian birth citizenship could fly (in spite of the loose way Hawaii did it at the time, which could be after the fact) then Cruz is in the side pocket and no law needs changing to make it so. It was so when he was born.

Meaning, that God is not called as a party to the agreement.

OK so now Trump will round up that crack team of investigators that he recruited and sent to Hawaii to get the truth on Obama and send them to Alberta to dig up stuff on Cruz?

Cruz is at least as qualified as Obola is.

Cruz is qualified by any legal standard you care to bring up.

"The Naturalization Act of 1790 probably constitutes the most significant evidence available. Congress enacted this legislation just three years after the drafting of the Constitution, and many of those who voted on it had participated in the Constitutional Convention. The act provided that “children of citizens of the United States, that may be born beyond the sea, or out of the limits of the United States, shall be considered as natural-born citizens.” - Professor Sarah Helene Duggin

Remember McCain? ...the Senate passed a resolution declaring that “John Sidney McCain, III, is a ‘natural born Citizen” under Article II, Section 1, of the Constitution of the United States.”

You no longer have to be an American citizen to be President, OBAMA proved that that twice.

The only time “natural born citizen” is used in the Constitution is regarding qualifications for being president. Now, when I was in school, long before this issue ever came up, the teacher said that “natural born” meant both parents were citizens. I would bet that there are old history textbooks around that would say that.

At least, being born in Canada is more than we know about where odumbo was hatched. Odumbo has established “past practice”.

Yes, it was so when he was born because of laws passes by Congress to confer basic citizenship. But Ted Cruz is NOT a natural born citizen by DEFINITION. Either the Constitution matters, or it does not. Choose wisely which side you cling to. Don’t bitch to me about Obama’s executive orders anymore.

Many of us were taught the same. Unfortunately, government has so managed to blur the lines between the Laws of Nature and the laws of Man that it apparently only takes one natural parent to make a fully natural-born citizen child nowadays.

Go figure.

Congress cannot change the definition of a word. All that matters with respect to qualifications to be President is: WHAT DID NATURAL BORN MEAN WHEN THE CONSTITUTION WAS ADOPTED?! Omg people . . We’re suppose to be the smart ones...
