Patricia Wanderlich got insurance through the Affordable Care Act this year, and with good reason: She suffered a brain hemorrhage in 2011, spending weeks in a hospital intensive care unit, and has a second, smaller aneurysm that needs monitoring.
But her new plan has a $6,000 annual deductible, meaning that Ms. Wanderlich, who works part time at a landscaping company outside Chicago, has to pay for most of her medical services up to that amount. She is skipping this years brain scan and hoping for the best.
To spend thousands of dollars just making sure it hasnt grown? said Ms. Wanderlich, 61. I dont have that money.
About 7.3 million Americans are enrolled in private coverage through the Affordable Care Act marketplaces, and more than 80 percent qualified for federal subsidies to help with the cost of their monthly premiums. But many are still on the hook for deductibles that can top $5,000 for individuals and $10,000 for families the trade-off, insurers say, for keeping premiums for the marketplace plans relatively low. The result is that some people no firm data exists on how many say they hesitate to use their new insurance because of the high out-of-pocket costs.
Insurers must cover certain preventive services, like immunizations, cholesterol checks and screening for breast and colon cancer, at no cost to the consumer if the provider is in their network. But for other services and items, like prescription drugs, marketplace customers often have to meet their deductible before insurance starts to help. . . .

No way is the NYT trying to criticize obamacare. This is just setting the stage to ask for an expansion of obamacare.
I empathize Unfortunately, the impending “bailout” of the industry is not designed to keep the USS Healthcare afloat.
You are correct.
I am a lucky woman, too. He’s a great dad and husband.
I can’t believe what he’s doing to my business. I liked it small and pretty care free. Now it’s a pain in the whazoo.
Your husband has a great talent for business.
Let him have this one, and start another little one for yourself......
LOL!
Ya know, stephen, not only am I *not* worried, I’m also pleased. The morons have GOT to be punished, and better so if it be by their own hand. And throw in a little global warming, too. It’s predicted to be an even colder winter.
Great minds think alike. As I have gotten him off and running and don’t enjoy the work anymore, I started painting again. My house looks like an art gallery.
Therrrrrrre ya go!
The problem is, morons by definition don’t learn.
ObamaCare is essentially the middle class, who can’t afford health insurance now, being forced to subsidize Medicaid and free healthcare for others. If they don’t, they will be fined accordingly by the fascist federal government.
These people are only trying to force someone else to pay for their care. Never do they address why that care cost so much. And it cost so much primarily because of government regulation and lawyers.
LOL, you know damn good and well they are not going down if they are waiting until after the elections to release the rates...
That part is true. Unfortunately, they see even more liberalism as the only way to fix it.
Single payer. It’s what they’ve always wanted. Ocare was designed to fail.
I ran the Obamacare numbers for us too. You are right. With the premiums and deductibles it would be just over a third of our annual income before they kicked in a dime. How is that affordable?
I thought I stated it in post #16
It isn't! You're paying for free healthcare to everyone who doesn't work and is on welfare...........
You said he pays $350 a month. Unless he’s rather young, that seems exceptionally low for an ObamaCare exchange policy. You also said his income was 25k a year, which would mean he would qualify for subsidies.
He's 52.......
You also said his income was 25k a year, which would mean he would qualify for subsidies.
You sure about that? Unless I'm mistaken, nobody will really know until they file their 2014 income taxes........Am I wrong?
An average plan is $559.71 a month, after subsidy would be 290.94 excluding extras (some plans offer a little more, regional differences in costs, etc.)
