Not-Too-Happy Meal: Diners Miffed Over Obamacare Surcharges
newsmax ^ | 10/7/14 | j blosser

Next time you eat out at a fancy restaurant, don't be surprised if, at the end of your meal, you spot an unfamiliar item on your tab — a surcharge to pay for Obamacare.

Diners at high-end restaurants such as Melisse, AOC, and a dozen others in the Los Angeles and San Francisco areas have noticed a 3 percent surcharge for employee healthcare tacked on to their bills, and the Los Angeles Times reports that some of the customers are none too happy about it. One diner complained in an online blog, "It's basically management saying 'Obamacare made me do it.' If you want to offset costs, try turning up the thermostat. There's your 3%! Now please pay your workers' health insurance and hush."

Better get used to it. "Once it starts you are going to see other segments in the industry, whether coffee shops or ice cream shops, dip their toe in if they see it's manageable and customers do not revolt," Jot Condie of the California Restaurant Association told the Times.

Josh Loeb, co-owner of Milo & Olive and Rustic Canyon, told the Times, "We want our staff to have healthcare. It's not because we support Obama or don't support Obama, or are Democrats or are not Democrats."

Restaurants have considered increasing the price of menu items to pay the cost of providing healthcare, but this would not take into account rent and liability insurance, which would require increasing menu costs by more than 3 percent to make the same amount of money as a simple surcharge

only the math-challenged could think that turning up the thermostat = 3% Obamacare surcharge.

The article is about restaurants in Los Angeles. Turning up the thermostat in LA generally means using less air conditioning; not more heat.

Using less AC means a savings in energy costs to offset the ACA costs.

That what the dimwit liberal was referring to.

And I wish taxes weren’t withheld from paychecks.
A vestige of FDR and paying for WWII. BTW, Rush has advocated no withholding for decades.
If all Americans had to sit down once a month and write checks for their federal taxes, state taxes, county taxes, town taxes, school taxes, etc., there would be a mini-revolution.

“Is that what you do at the business you own?”

In fact I do have a business on the side.

Do I after-the-fact slip in charges to a customer to balloon up the price of what I had agreed to charge them?

If I did, I would soon have very few customers.

We’ll see rather this is something that should be done or not when the left sends out goonsquads to make them stop showing it on the receipt.

The comments at the LA Times article are 10-1 liberals whining about the 3% added to their bill, they think the business should just eat the cost of obamacare.

Airport rental cars do this crap too. You get the online rate and then they itemize a bunch of fees and taxes sometimes adding up to 30-40% of the total bill.

Makes one want to drop out of the system and eat at home more often instead of getting ripped off.

Healthcare isn’t free and someone has to pay for it.

But free government stuff is FREE. That's the point of free government stuff. The government pays for it so we don't have to.

I'm going to go get me a new Obamaphone now. My old Obamaphone is an iPhone 5 and I want a free iPhone 6.

“I think a line by line listing of what the gov’t is costing people would be beneficial.”

It would do wonders for those who are free-market challenged.

I like the idea of say McDonald’s upfront saying a cheeseburger costs $3.00 and $0.55 was going to taxes, $0.75 to labor costs, $1.20 to inventory and overhead, $0.25 to legal costs, and $0.25 to company profit.

What I do not favor is McDonalds saying a cheeseburger is $3.00 on the menu and without telling you tacks on an extra $0.20 to pay for ACA.

“HMMMM... I just paid six (6) times and the doctor hasn’t touched me yet!
Really?
That’s going to work?”

I think your missing the point in all of this. It’s a form of protest.
Big deal, you pay for the same things everyone
else pays for, so what. Your going to pay that extra 3%
across the board on everything anyway. Gripe about it all
you want you will pay. And that’s it. At least someone is
letting you know. You should be mad at the people who
sneak it in through higher prices.

“But now they get healthcare...so yes my tips will go down by 3%. Someone has to pay for obamacare.”

Well then maybe you should take a 3% cut in pay also.

Imagine if parents actually had to pay the costs of THEIR kids’ free public education.

I’m very cost adverse when it comes to luxuries like eating out.So the more expensive it is the less I’ll do it.Regardless of *why* it’s more expensive.

Why? Do you support Obamacare? How much do you tip anyway?

15% to 18% unless the service is lousy.

But now they get healthcare...so yes my tips will go down by 3%. Someone has to pay for obamacare.

That never occurred to me.As a rule I tip 20% unless a) I get terrible service at a restaurant and b) I never plan to go back there. So from now on I'll tip 17%...or maybe even 15% when I see that surcharge.

Well then maybe you should take a 3% cut in pay also.

Why?

You do this enough, refuse, very vocally and up-front to pay this type of surcharge and watch the practice stop.

The server will complain loudly to the owner of the restaurant because they are watching their pay decrease.

And as for the argument that they will just raise the prices, is it the only restaurant in town, do you have no hands or arms so you cannot cook?

If the Republicans were smart (and they are not), they would end deductibility for state and local taxes tomorrow.

No quicker way to turn all the blue states red with an instant uprising.

Actually, I think that owners of bars and restaurants should include a list of all increased costs because of government regulations and various taxes. Imagine how apoplectic a lot of people would be to find out that 2/3rds to 3/4ths or more of their bill is because of government.

City taxes.
County taxes.
State taxes to include license taxes, especially liquor license taxes.
Federal taxes, especially liquor taxes.
Cost of city, county, state and federal regulations.
FICA and unemployment insurance.
Obamacare costs.

It would make most sense if they broke it down:

“For every $10 on your bill, between $6.65 and $7.50 goes to pay for the cost of government.”

I would like to know about the 3% as well.

Since the 3% is going to the wait staff, I would thus reduce my standard tip from 15% to 12%. The employee still gets the 15% and I don’t pay any more than I have to.
