Panic over student’s ‘military-type jacket’ sends school into lockdown
EAG News ^ | 9/18/2014 | Victor Skinner

A “suspicious” looking middle school student with a “green military-type jacket” sent a Connecticut school into lockdown for two hours Tuesday.

A school staff member alerted school authorities to a suspicious man roaming the school hallway, describing the person as roughly 5 feet 7 inches and wearing a green military-type jacket. School officials relayed the possible threat to police, who issued a lockdown around 11 a.m., NBC reports.

“Officers searched the John F. Kennedy Middle School and its surrounding grounds, but police said the initial search ‘revealed nothing of a suspicious nature,’” WFSB.com reports.

The school district alerted parents of the lockdown, which of course made them very worried. Several nervous parents waited outside of the school during the search, but those who approached were told to go back and wait in their cars, according to WFSB.

“We got a phone call 15 to 20 minutes ago saying a teacher saw a suspicious person in the area and that’s all they said,” parent Courtney Peluso told the news site.

“It bothers me a little bit, it makes me wonder who is walking around, but they’re safe like the officer said, they are safe,” parent Andrea Smith said.

Meanwhile, school staff secured the school’s 800 students in classrooms and the cafeteria, superintendent Tim Connellan said.

At some point, police and school officials found a student fitting the description, and he was deemed not a threat. Police then conducted a second search, just in case, before giving the “all-clear” around 1 p.m., NBC reports.

Connellan told WFSB the student was walking in the hallway, while other students were in class, so that’s why the staff member who reported him was so suspicious, which doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.

Don’t students walk the hallway to go to the restroom all the time when other students are in class?

Perhaps it was the green jacket that make him look like a terrorist threat.

Regardless, the superintendent said neither the student nor the staffer who reported him will face disciplinary action.

NBC reports the lockdown at JFK Middle School is the second in recent weeks, after issued a lockdown a few weeks ago while investigating a nearby back robbery.

Several who posted to the news sites had some harsh criticisms for how school officials handled the suspicious person complaint.

“All over a ‘military style jacket.’ Gee, what’s going to happen when someone wears their Cub Scout or Boy Scout uniform to school?” WFSB poster KRB052 questioned.

“Is it any surprise why American students lag behind their international peers when this is the caliber of people ‘educating’ them?” @ToucanSamLV posted.

“Good grief! I used to wear my dad’s military jacket to school all the time,” Wayne Kovacs posted to the NBC story. “Some innocent kid is going to get killed because of OVER VIGILANT, ‘BETTER-SAFE-THAN-SORRY’ IDIOT!”

“Fear is what will ruin this nation,” Brian Kelnohofer wrote. “Fear is what will turn this nation into a police state.”

Wouldn’t that tend to affect only the dominant arm? I have never been any kind of switch hitter but my arms are about equal. I have always had to go the gym to find a weight heavy enough to stimulate any muscle growth anyway. Don’t have anything that big just hanging around handy within easy reach.

Oh come on. You lobbed me a slow pitch so I could knock it out of the park.

Sorry, bruh, that one is too easy even for me.

I weigh eighty six pounds more than when I signed up fifty two years ago.
= = = = = = = = = = =
When I enlisted in 56 was 5’9” 130 lbs (probably had some weights in my pocket) and got out 8 years later 6’ 148 lbs.
Stayed in the 150-160 range till I was 50 had a very significant life style change...
Went from the ‘field’ to riding around etc, stopped drinking, stopped smoking all 3 in same year...
I jumped to 180 quicker than you could say Jack Robinson and now at 24celcius I am in the 225 range and the only good thing I can think of is at my age I am NOT losing weight. (as compared to being ill and dropping weight).

Eat what I want, no regular hours sleeping, no prescription drugs (well NO drugs...caffeine), last Dr visit was 2007 for cataract surgery and still kicking along, with people not ‘believing’ my age....

VA was calling me to schedule an appointment... <: <: <:
Makes sense since they figure I won’t show.....

Bought my son a flight jacket from an Army/Navy store when in elementary school. Couple of sizes too big and he wore it till it was too small. He became a Marine, but when I pulled the jacket out of storage, he was thrilled and will give it to his son. Someday.

These people would have had kittens if they’d seen my high school in the 70s in the Winter. Army field jackets were very common attire. Olive drab, pretty much the same as used in WWII thru, what? The late 70s?

Keep on truckin’ man, at this point I would totally disregard any advice from any doctor. There are SOME nurses I will listen to though. I learned long ago that anyone, male or female, who has had a long career in nursing has far more HANDS ON experience than any doctor and often they correctly diagnose the cause of a problem when the doctor gets it wrong. I have also noted that many of the older ones who are in good health and still moving well say that they refuse to take any kind of prescription, refuse flu vaccines etc. and are skeptical of most over the counter medicine,of course over the counter is usually something that used to be prescription only.

Despite those shortcomings you mentioned, prominently front/center were the blowjob kneepads in case the Obergruppenführer shows up unexpectedly.

My Mother, Father, 5 Aunts and 1 Uncle were RN’s.

That was sure an oddity when I was growing up.

My Father a Male RN licensed in the 30’s....

Whether I know it or remember etc am sure not much “good” was said in regards to MD’s during family gatherings...

The ONLIEST med I ‘believe’ in is APC....

Remember in the 50’s Navy APC was used for everything from Headaches to Clap (NSU if you were ‘designated’ a lifer).

Yep. Class of ‘82 here. At our high school, the fashion was to wear jackets we bought at the Army-Navy store. That might make some veterans here cringe, but we wore coats from the Army-Navy store - even the girls did (of which I am one).

And camo / fatigues have been in style for the past 15 years or so.

And I wonder how many of us homeschoolers have noticed homeschooled students wearing “gun vests” to co-op class.

OTOH, considering the school shootings over the past 15-20 years, I can understand why school employees overreact these days.

LOL. See my post #79 above. I said the same thing - jackets from the Army-Navy store were fashionable back then - even some of us girls wore them.
