It's all about PR.

The NFL hasn't banned him for life. They suspended him "indefinitely," which is not going to stay in place. There's no provision under the NFL-NFLPA collective bargaining agreement for an indefinite suspension, and this sort of thing wouldn't be permitted under the law in any case.

I suspect the NFL is preparing to work behind the scenes to pay Ray Rice a substantial settlement to just go away and never show his face anywhere near an NFL game in the future.

Furthermore, no man is justified in striking a woman unless his life is in immediate danger.

Self defense is a protected right for everyone, and every man is justified in defending himself against this.

This case isn't about a man defending himself against a woman anyway, so why expand it to include that?

Released? I think the police are justified in arresting him.

From what I have been hearing, women stay with men like that, no matter their economic standing. I don’t get it.

Albeit is always more infuriating than being knocked unconscious. If the fury escalates, there can be reverse head butts to the nose, stomped toes, ear splitting screams, scratching, biting and God help you if she is a judoka!

BTW I’m not speaking from experience. My lovely redhead wife has gotten mad a time or two but never that mad.

Even couples who physically fight, do so a tiny fraction of the time. We live in the most policed society of all time. Throughout most of history, women have been attracted to guys that can defend them and the household, fight off rivals and aggressively assert themselves in the fields and marketplace. Not to mention the fact that the offspring of Ray Rice won’t even have to flinch a shoulder to lay out a bully. Can’t you just see Janay’s daughter jacking up some poor fool rapist or paramour, in an elevator, by the neck, like Darth Vader, 20 years from now?

If he committed a crime or crimes, there are police and there are courts.

If he violated any morals clause in his contract, there are damages and there are remedies, perhaps including termination.

What bothers me about this incident is the media-driven moral panic, it's like all the nonsense about colleges punishing rapes or "sexual assaults". The only thing missing is the Congressional hearing (but I haven't read the paper yet this morning). Maybe we'll be hearing about "Janay's law" by tomorrow.

Look, if you bottle thuggery and make billions, you shouldn't bitch about it when some of it accidentally spills out on video. And when you collect millions of late adolescents/young adults together who have just finished four years of organized ego-building, put them under pressure in the daylight, mix the sexes in living quarters, and look the other way when they get drunk or get high at night, well, you shouldn't need a Senator to tell you what's going to happen.

Lots of pro athletes, minus the gift, would be in prison or dead. Americans, especially young men, are raised to look up to them.

I'd give Janay her $25 million meal ticket back. She bought the ticket, let her take the ride.

And for God's sake, let the billionaire owners and the politicians they buy with their money shut up for once.

She waw not battered. She was struck once. Are you aware all all the factors that may have also contributed to her becoming unconscious? Was she on medication? Was she intoxicated? Did she ever have a prior injury? Did she strike her head against a rail or a wall on the way down? Was she concussed or did she merely faint? Was there bruising? What did the x-rays reveal?

Or maybe the Ravens will wear "domestic violence awareness" helmets in game #7.

Do you understand WHY the NFL, which is already a fabulous wealth generator, has become so obsessed with marketing to, and it's reputation among, young women?

Girls are bored by football (for the most part). They don't "get" it.

Roger Goodell, who has already made his padróns billionaires by running a sanitized thug show that appeals to young and even middle-aged white men is constant having media events regarding breast cancer (when the NFL could and should promote prostate cancer funding) and other issues/images to appeal to women.

They're not going to get much more of a female audience no matter what, so, what's it all about?

The NFL is marketing to young women for a very simple reason: they've completely tapped out their traditional market base, so their only growth opportunities lie in casual fans -- or in fans who don't have any interest in football at all.

This is why the NFL has now completely crossed the line into the entertainment world as defined by People magazine, TMZ and "Entertainment Tonight." They don't care if women like football or not. They -- or, more accurately, their sponsors -- only care if women are interested enough in Tom Brady's wife Giselle to tune into a Super Bowl for 15 minutes.

It's not about the football anymore, dude. That's why I haven't watched an NFL game in years.

I have no sympathy for Ray Rice. That said, is this incident with his former fiancée, now wife, the first domestic violence case in which he has been involved? If so, how does the NFL get away with an “indefinite” suspension when its new rules call for a 6-game suspension for first offenses? This is especially true given that the incident occurred before the rules were even devised.

The "indefinite" suspension won't last. Usually, when a professional sports league suspends a player indefinitely, it's basically a "placeholder" until a more complete investigation and formal hearing takes place.

Rice's suspension from the NFL will probably be exactly six games. But because his contract was terminated by the Ravens, he's basically "suspended" until another team is willing to sign him -- which will probably never happen.

The problem with the NFL is that players have absolutely zero leverage. There's really no alternative professional league for them to play in, like you have in basketball, hockey or soccer.

The NBA and NFL are rife with spoiled bullies and thugs.....I don't think they are the majority but their numbers are substantial. The fix is simple if they have a record of drug use or violence don't hire. If they develop the trait later on.... fire them!!!

Not just yes - HELL YES.

The thug not only acted like an ass before cold-cocking her, the video shows the elevator doors opening and he moves away from her body and stands up to act like nothing is going on. The doors close and he bends back down to her. He knew he was doing wrong and acted accordingly. He deserves to be on a chain gang, working for each meal instead of being paid millions.

Through out my dating years I went out with a few women who were in a state of turmoil or drama and seemed to have a short fuse. I would shed these women like the plaque, They were walking disasters looking for a place to explode and show how tough they were. One was a preachers daughter......very shocking when this trait showed itself. These people seemed to work hard at being unhappy!!!

their bottom linere: the NFL

And there's the irony. Is the NFL going to stop recruiting men with violent or criminal behavior in their backgrounds? Does the NFL really want to totally tame their players? Might make for a less exciting game.

I'm all for "innocent until proven guilty". Under this standard, Michael Vick would not be playing football. But Rice would, at least until he's charged with something.
