Here's What the Owner of the Oldest Operating McDonald's Has to Say About Minimum Wage
The Wire ^ | September 4, 2014 | Adam Chandler

Posted on 09/04/2014 4:15:03 PM PDT by EveningStar

Sixty-one years ago last month, the third-ever McDonald's opened in Downey, Calif., a suburb of Los Angeles and home to Apollo, the third-ever NASA manned spaceflight program. McDonald's went to 119 countries from Baku, Azerbaijan, to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; Apollo went to the moon.

A man who witnessed much of this history is Ron Piazza, who owns the landmark McDonald's in Downey —the world's oldest-operating McDonald's— along with nine other golden-arched franchises in the area.

Piazza is something of a throwback. Plainspoken and serious, he is the type of business owner whose name and phone number are printed at the bottom of all the customer receipts...

"I started at a dollar an hour. Poverty is as severe as it was when I was making a dollar an hour. The minimum wage increase, frankly, hasn't reduced our poverty problem.

Do I think it’s fair that people live in poverty? Of course not. But I don’t know how you can say that business is responsible for that."

Not too near Downey, yeah, in the area.

I live at the far end of 19 now.

You still live in the LA area?

Both our sons worked at fast food restaurants when they were in high school. Again, like your family, no intent to make it as a career but they learned to meet the public and now both of them thrive with that skill.

Just the other day I had an idea to drive all the way down Rosemead/Lakewood to PCH in Long Beach.

I’ve never driven that whole route from East Pasadena. I was checking to see which cities it’d go through and read about Downey. About Apollo and how the Carpenters were from Downey.

I moved away from LA in 1969 as a kid in elementary school. Still visited a lot growing up, Grand Parents, Aunt, Uncle and Cousin.

In 1990 I moved back down after grad school and been here ever since.

How else do you disenfranchise the illegal aliens?

Your argument might make sense if we didn't have to tell our life story to the IRS and hope they don't attack.

This concept that a National Voter ID Card is a bad thing was trumped by Motor Voter(National Voter Registration Act of 1993).

The FOUNDERS didn't put a right to vote in the Constitution for a REASON.

The concept here is to fix things so that the CPUSA and their communist parasite gibsmedat LEGION never have the opportunity to control any branch of the United States government again.

This is class war.

We win, they lose.

The article says that the National Labor Relations Board had said that all McDonalds can be treated as one entity for union organizing purposes. What is unclear is whether this decision was made by the Board that the Supreme Court recently ruled was illegal due to Barry’s attempt to pack the NLRB with his half-wit Marxist buddies without Congressional approval, making null any decision made by the board. It’s difficult to keep track of Barry’s illegal Marxist shenanigans.

Ah, Apollo.

North American Aviation.

I think the original NA plant was taken over by Consolidated Vultee in the early 50’s. I think maybe, the Appolo fire took place at Cape Canaveral. Could be wrong.

I still remember in the maybe 3rd grade the planes taking off over our school yard.

Haven’t felt a pride like that in years. May never again.

Great response. This person needs to be hired by the GOP as their spokesperson cause the leadership are too incompetent to give that clear and reasonable response.

Today I heard someone whining about their pay wage. Ok I thought you can work another job at Fedex or UPS which I hear pay great.

I wonder what they’ll do when people decide $5 for a plain kids hamburger and 25 for big mac is too high and mcdonalds closes.

Thing is, is fast food difficult or mentally challenging to any degree? What about the rest of non-management retail? The kids working at the fast food restaurants don’t have a clue.

“...the plans for the unionization of
the unemployed haven’t been implemented yet...”

That was done a century ago. It was called the Communist Party.

Frankly, fast food prepared by disgruntled workers agitated by SEIU seems much less appetizing lately, if you get my drift.

They’ll turn a few of them into automats, so they can try to justify limiting hiring to those with university degrees.

They don’t have to flip them.. I have done network work at McDonalds.. they slap the burger on the grill, lower the heated lid and the fryer does the rest. the timer goes off, the lid opens up and they are bun ready..

the “flipper” just has to take them off the grill before they over cook. Something that is beyond some of them.

Many McDonalds have automated drink machines, the POS system tells the machine “medium coke” it drops a cup, drops some ice, fills the cup to the top and someone puts a lid on it and serves it. Would not take much more for that machine to have an automatic lid stuffer and delivery system to the counter.

Unfortunately, the problem isn’t that A is A, but that people who refuse to acknowledge that fact and have government guns to help them fake reality.
