The .22 Ammo Shortage Mystery -- Solved!
Motley Fool ^ | August 31, 2014 | Rich Smith

Posted on 08/31/2014 9:34:25 AM PDT by lbryce

Earlier this year, CBS News spotlighted a growing shortage of .22-caliber ammunition. "One of the most popular and common" -- and cheapest -- calibers of ammo for hunters and target shooters alike, CBS reports that .22 shells are in short supply these days. Interviewing one supplier, CBS reported that while as recently as two years ago it was still possible to buy .22-caliber ammunition "by the pallet-load... now they're putting restrictions on how much you can get and how you get that ammo."

Retailers are shooting blanks This is a problem from ammunition retailers -- and for gun owners as well. Statistically speaking, 24%-45% of Americans own guns either for self-defense or sporting purposes. But getting the ammo to load into those guns is becoming a bit of a trick.

First show back from working in Oz and went crazy - almost. Looking at the prices were scary - stuff way overpriced. You really have to know your prices before buying.

And to think, I bought my first box of .22 shorts back in 1962. 45 cents for 50 rounds. I was 14 years old.

Now it is about $10.00 a box of 50, and you have to be 21 years old to buy.

I bought 333 rounds for $21 at the local department store. They seem to get one box per quarter.

Thing is if you see them where ever I’d buy - sure they’re expensive but then .....

My theory is that old retired guys snap it up first thing in the AM when the shipment comes in, then resell it in the interwebs at inflated prices.

I thought it was pricey at the time, but it is good ammo.

A couple of years ago, you could buy a 500 round box of .22 LR at Walmart for less than $20.

Indeed. Back then I bought, about a month apart, 550-round boxes at $14.50 and $15.00 and pist and moaned all the way home.

Talked with the WalMart gun clerk as to availability and he said there was erratic delivery at night, which was put under lock and key until sales between 7-10 a.m. "at about $8.00 per 100 rounds, with buying limits". Mother of God, those same boxes are now $40+ each?

A June Kingman, AZ show had them at $80-$100 per 500, but nobody was buying.

I found two 100 round boxes at Walmart last week. Remington brand. I bought one box, and left the other for someone else as I have plenty of Federal bricks.

Unfortunately, the Federal is not what I call good quality. power charges seem to vary and sometimes I get a misfire when the primer in the rim fails to ignite.

So I use Remington or WINCHESTER when I can find them.

Still waiting for his explaination why the first guy didn't see as much as he wanted.

Because they guy over in the check-out counter right now panicked when he couldn't buy 10 bricks and his wife made him settle for 5, leaving only 2 on the shelf.

I find the Remington to be iffy and the Federal to be reliable

Read this article three times. I can’t figure out what caused the shortage yet.

Can anyone illuminate this for me?

Now more than 3X the price of a few years ago but at least it is available now.
