Today marks the centenary of the birth of Sir Alec Guinness and to commemorate this, several of his finest films are being reissued on DVD and shown at the cinema.
Such fuss would probably have caused the intensely private star acute embarrassment. After all, his good friend John Le Carré once noted how much Guinness "loathes the world's flattery and mistrusts its praise".

Gary Cooper was "nice" but "probably a tiny bit boring" Yes. I have never gotten the appeal of Gary Cooper. Tiny bit? More like completely boring.

In the early 1970s my dad took me to see Guinness’ as Hitler in ‘Hitler the Last 10 days’,
It was a low budget British film that touched on satire, like Hitler comparing himself to Jesus Christ, but it instilled a fascination in me on the subject that still lasts to today.
Decades later I loved the way more serious German version ‘Downfall’. Very good movie.

Just think...he was only 62 when they filmed “Star Wars”. Great casting.
Peter Cushing in IV and then Christopher Lee later (earlier). Brilliant.

TCM has been running his movies all day. Caught the tail end of one of them - The Lavender Hill Mob. A very good one.
