Almost 20 years ago this week, America fell in love with televised trials. On July 7, 1995, O.J. Simpsons Dream Team defense took over his murder trial and televised court proceedings were transformed from a novelty for seniors and stay-at-home moms to must-see TV.
America was split, with many people rooting for Simpsons conviction and others praying for him to be found innocent. The courtroom changed from a legal proceeding to a spectacle, a talking point, a sporting event, with the public wanting scores and breakdowns every day.
So its fitting, sadly, that this week, George Zimmermans defense team will take the stage and many Americans still want to see this newest Trial of the Century analyzed and broken down, play by play.
But the Zimmerman trial is different, and it might be time for us to realize that we cant rate this case like others in the past.
Most televised trials dont have sides. While we watched the Jodi Arias, Menendez brothers and Casey Anthony trials, it was more for the spectacle than any larger issues or passions. But that's not the case with the Zimmerman trial. Even if polls show that Americans believe Zimmerman is guilty, there are sides, and many people believe that there are real consequences to this trial.
Legal analysts, court observers and scholars provide analysis and context for the Zimmerman trial, but explaining which legal team made a good argument is not the same thing as keeping a tally of wins and losses, which is what all too many people want.
It is perfectly understandable why some want the Zimmerman trial to be scored like a football game. As a nation, we arent too fond of long, drawn-out and nuanced experiences. We want a poll after every debate, a score after every witness....

Best coverage is the live feed streaming on the Internet with no commentary and no commercials.
The feral "Gibsmedats" will swarm out of the ghetto and riot like never before.
Another Black Racist gonna spin....
Most people with an IQ above Rachel Jeantel knows that Zimmerman is being lynched...this is total self defense
I refuse to watch TV on my computer. Looks like a 1920 movie.
I did not buy a $5,000, 70” TV to sit, dark, while I look at a 19” computer screen.
I can barely see my computer well enough to prevent a decent % of my misspellings.
I think the subtext of this case, and much else as well, is that a white man has no right to kill a black man ever, period, while a black man killing a white man must have some sort of explanation that mitigates the crime.
This is so powerful that George Zimmerman has had to be created an honorary white man in order to drive home the point.
HLN is just crap distilled from CNN (Communist News Network).
If FOX makes your skin crawl and you like HLN, you are a libtard.
florida is the #1 state for CW permits. ovwr 1 million abd still rising.
mine is still pending. going on 3 weeks now.
I disagree. FOX is as guilty as the rest for willful errors of omission. There are so many it is difficult to count them all.
That’s why you buy a computer with HDMI-out. We have ours hooked up to a projector servicing a 108” screen. When I want to watch something outside of the media room, I can plug any television into the HDMI-out on my laptop and use the network to access everything stored on the basement computer or internet.
I disagree. A Mazda is as bad as a Pinto. ;)
I love FL, vacation there every winter and feel totally comfortable carrying my pistol and my PA carry permit.
Never had a problem in FL, with neither the law nor the bad guys.
And you sir cannot read with any comprehension. You have also resorted to name calling based on your own lack of ability to read and comprehend.
I spend the majority of my time, most of the year, outside. Do not need to be “plugged-in” 24/7/365.
My main room is only 24’ x 28”. I don't need a 108” screen. (I am only about 16’ from my TV, so 70” is fine.) If I sit closer, the muscles in my eyes get tired turning eyes side to side.
I don't have a "media room" and I never just "watch TV". Don't watch many movies. I always "multi-task". I am always reading a newspaper, surfing the internet, rolling Easter eggs across the floor, or watching the box score of a sporting event while I follow something on TV.
It’s in the details that you are not hearing that the jury is. Like the testimony of the Police Department Neighborhood Watch Coordinator who emphatically impeached the idea that Zim was a wannabe cop. She offered him a position with a uniform and car and he turned it down.
You didn’t hear that on FNC, now did you?
NEVER trust anyone who MUST put the word Professor before his name in an opinion article.
Likewise here.
plus fill in anchorette that my skin crawls when I hear her voice
Who?
And what about Nancy Disgrace, saying that the defense better step or else.
I have an ominous feeling that Zimmerman is going to be found guilty of something.
are any of the jurors black?
If they have heard about the threats of riots, they may bail, like the white guilt ridden voters who put the imposter in the WH for fear of being called racist.
