Hurricane Sandy From Space

NASA

Just in case you thought the Hurricane hype couldn't get any louder, check out this dispatch from Weather Channel meterologist Stu Ostro:

- History is being written as an extreme weather event continues to unfold, one which will occupy a place in the annals of weather history as one of the most extraordinary to have affected the United States.

- REGARDLESS OF WHAT THE OFFICIAL DESIGNATION IS NOW OR AT/AFTER LANDFALL -- HURRICANE (INCLUDING IF "ONLY" A CATEGORY ONE), TROPICAL STORM, POST-TROPICAL, EXTRATROPICAL, WHATEVER -- OR WHAT TYPE OF WARNINGS ARE ISSUED BY THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE AND NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER -- PEOPLE IN THE PATH OF THIS STORM NEED TO HEED THE THREAT IT POSES WITH UTMOST URGENCY...

- With Sandy having already brought severe impacts to the Caribbean Islands and a portion of the Bahamas, and severe erosion to some beaches on the east coast of Florida, it is now poised to strike the northeast United States with a combination of track, size, structure and strength that is unprecedented in the known historical record there...

- A meteorologically mind-boggling combination of ingredients is coming together:

This has the capacity to affect the election, not in Obama's favor.

Now it’s a division of PMSNBC used to “validate and propagate” climate change theory.

It’s a CAT1 hurricane.

Is this guy a credible meteorologist or just some guy attention whoring for ratings?

Most of the links I wanted to look at on www.weather.com are down. I guess too many people want to look at them, too. And I am directly in the affected area, good ol’ NYC.

The Globull Warmers at the WC dream of storms like this. “All the old people who don’t get their weather info from the Internet are watching us 24/7.” They have to hype it for a ratings bump.

It’s a CAT1 hurricane.

CAT1 refers only to windspeed. Any hurricane force winds are serious, but CAT 1 is mild, when it comes to windspeeds.

The problem is water.

Sandy has the lowest barometric pressure EVER, at this latitude (how far north).

It is one of, or possibly THE largest (area) storms ever.

That means it's moving A LOT of water.

60+ MPH winds over a 500 mile stretch of coastline.

The destructive potential of Sandy (they put a number on it) is higher than Katrina.

Fox already has Whorealdo standing out in the street even though the Storm isn't predicted to hit NYC until tomorrow evening. Looks like a clear, slightly breezy evening in NYC. Poor Whorealdo was whining about the unfairness that Obama has to skip campaigning to monitor the storm from the Whitehouse while Romney gets to go about business as usual.

We’ve never heard of mandatory evac of the Jersey Shore- have had family there since before the ‘thirties.

NYers do respect weather. Everyone I’ve spoken with today is getting ready for this thing. Liberals sounding like preppers; they’ve been through some of these. The Ice Storm ‘78 (the dogs were shivering by the time the lights went back on - I think it was 2 weeks of freezing temps).

Have a sister named after a hurricaine. She’s spoiled with a generator in Conn. hoping she doesn’t have to resort to firewood, it’ll mean no running water.

Beaches are already flooding in NJ. From AC to Barnegat all able bodied sons were out today “battening down hatches”; otherwise deserted.

Reminds me of the story of the boy who cried wolf. One day we won’t listen to these idiots.

No meteorologist has ever seen this combination of fronts coming together so it is unique, plus it is extremely large with very low pressure and THAT is unique, too.

Take precautions if you are anywhere in the zone. If there is a hurricane coming toward me, I go into automatic prep then whatever happens, happens, but I'm ready.

The barometric pressure sounds like what was in the Midwest for the Blizzard of 1978. (same idea, just colder) The snow wasn't exactly coming "down" is was blowing sideways.

The Great Blizzard of 1978 was a historic blizzard which struck the Ohio Valley and Great Lakes from January 25–27, 1978. The 28.28 inches (958 millibars) barometric pressure measurement recorded in Cleveland, Ohio was the lowest non-tropical atmospheric pressure ever recorded in the mainland United States until the Upper Midwest Storm of October 26, 2010 (28.20" measured at 5:13PM CDT at Bigfork Municipal Airport, Bigfork, MN). The lowest central pressure for the 1978 blizzard was 28.05" (953 mb) measured in southern Ontario a few hours after the aforementioned record in Cleveland Star Tribune

Oh, it’s the water.

The size of this thing is impressive.

The media will hype it, fine.

The lnly way it’ll affect the election will be to recreate what was once known as broken glass Republicans into Hurricaine Rpublicans, and variations from that.

These are solid blue states x Penn and NH, neither of which seem to have hurricaine Dems.

It’ll keep Benghazi off the view for a few days, but THAT is NOT going to go away.

The ambassador was killed in-country. It won’t go away even if BO gets back in - ptu-ptu.

Accuweather is calling it "category 1 tropical rainstorm." Storm surge predictions lowered to "5 to 10 inches." Latest map shows storm is moving slowly back northeast, off the coast.

It will still be a rainy windy week but no apocalypse in the forecast.

According to the 5pm forecast discussion (NO SFMR-ADJUSTED SURFACE WINDS OF HURRICANE FORCE WERE DETECTED IN ANY QUADRANT ), the winds aren't even that high.

I mentioned on another thread that as I (a complete layman on this) look at the satellite and radar animations, I think the BAMM tracking prediction (Where it continues out into the Atlantic) looks to be what is happening.

I got a lot of grief for suggesting it. :-)

I guess time will tell if the experts are better than a complete hack like me. :-P

Predicted for Frankenstorm from the above article: As of Saturday afternoon, the surface and precipitation model valid for Monday afternoon, Oct. 29 predicts a center of low pressure with a value of 949 millibars crossing the coastline in the vicinity of Newark, New Jersey, not far from New York City/Long Island/Queens.

Midwest's Blizzard of 1978 was 956 millibars. IF this all makes land it will be NASTY. Don't think they are crying wolf.If cold met warm like this over Kansas or OK we would be saying HUGE tornado.

Sandy could help delivery Pennsylvania to Romney, as the pro-Obama masses on the eastern end of the state, Philadelphia, are bogged down in recovery, but the Pro-Romney forces on the West, Pittsburgh & surrounding areas, are unaffected and go vote.

BTW, I found a cool link under this Business Insider article to a bunch of New York City livecams, for those who want to follow this storm’s progress:

I remember that storm. I was going to Case Western Reserve and was planning to go in that Monday morning. The wind has been blowing from the previous day at 40 mph or more, we had 10 inches on the ground Monday morning. Then the wind picked up to 100 mph and we got another 10 inches. CWRU closed for the first time in 25 years.

Pretty spectacular.
