wow, i haven’t been on this site in a while and the amount of back-and-forth anger among members is pretty intense.

Maybe FR needs to change their policy that comments directly at other members are not allowed and will be pulled. Maybe that will result in a deeper discussion of conservative values and interests.

For example: Remove comments submitted in the first person like “You think i’m a nazi?”...or “You are nothing but a complete (fill in blank).

I’d rather see discussions about developing a list of talking points on all the items that should preclude Obama from being re-elected rather personal attacks.

Found this review of FreeRepublic on the internet, circa 2001. Surprising how things change.

Unlike Lucianne and Democratic Underground, FR management is surprisingly tolerant of "disrupters" who go against the forum's ideological bent, as long as they try to be "thoughtful" in their criticisms. If you are a liberal poster, though, expect to get nasty personal attacks as well as polite disagreement.

I gave. But I can understand the temptation not to give this time around because a lot of conservatives recognize that Obama is an enemy of freedom and our constitution and must be stopped. Even if that means we must vote for Romney. And people are afraid that they will be thrown off the site for it. So why donate? It’s an honest problem. Are peoPle who are willing to vote Romney to get rid of Obama even welcome here?

2ndDivisionVet, I just wanted to tell you how much I appreciate your very well-intentioned post. I'm disappointed, as are you I am sure, with what it has deteriorated into.

You stated that we need to put the FReepathon to bed, and because it is moving slowly, "The DUmmies, Morons, Kos Kiddies and that crew are laughing up their sleeves." As they've watched this thread unfold, I imagine they have moved on from their sleeves and are now laughing their asses off.

I'm sorry this hasn't turned out the way you had hoped, and again thank you for encouraging financial support from your fellow FReepers. I'm pretty sure I have seen a couple of donations up thread, so "Kudos" to you and to them.

Finally, if I haven't done so in the past, I want to thank you for defending our country with your military service. God bless you, and God bless America.

I haven’t posted here in a few weeks, because I have grown so upset with what FR has become in the past year. This thread exemplifies it perfectly.

I can remember when FR did things that actually changed history. Now it has become a mud fight between warring factions. It has reached the point where rational discussion isn’t tolerated. It used to be OK to discuss differences of opinion; then it degenerated into attacking not only Republican candidates with whom FReepers had differences, but also attacking fellow FReepers who supported (or at least did not condemn) them.

So, no, I’m not going to do an Opus thread. My presence or absence here is hardly worth its own thread, but I don’t expect to post here very much in the future. I’ll continue to lurk and use FR as a great source of news and opinion, but I’m just not up to participating. It just isn’t worth tolerating the nastiness. (Some replying posts will likely illustrate my point).

What I will do is work my ass off to make sure that every Republican up and down my ballot is elected, from top to bottom. Because the United States of America may not survive four more years of what we have now.

Yours in FReedom,

clintonh8r

I was supporting Cain at first and then got behind Newt, then Rick. When I gave a modest kudos to Mitt for saying to a moonbat “if you want free stuff vote for the other guy”, I got a pounded. This may get me zotted but I can do without that cr@p.

Ok, since this thread has come to be what it is, I’ll add my two cents.

First, I’ll say that this is still one of the best sites on the web. When I first started becoming interested in politics, this site was immeasurably helpful in getting me acquainted with the current political situation. For that, I will be forever grateful, so know that, when I make my following points, I still really like this site, despite its flaws. Here’s a observations:

1) No one here is disputing Jim Robinson’s right to run his site however he wants. We know that we can stop visiting this site or post somewhere else. We’re just dismayed that the greatest conservative forum on the web is collapsing. Sure, we can go somewhere else if we don’t like it, but it’s senseless to just let this site die for silly reasons.

2) The lack of posters is hurting more than just freepathons. With less people, this site is not the great news aggregator that it once was. Going here used to be one stop shopping for news and commentary. Now, the site can no longer fulfill that role, and there’s less of a reason to visit the site because of it. It’s sad to see how little activity this site has now, and the place seems to be a shell of its former self.

3) The lack of posters also means less posting and commentary on each thread. It’s sad to see the site being half dead. When I read the older threads, I am in awe of how intelligent the discussion is.

4) There are a few things that have made the posters on this site lose much of their credibility in my mind. One is the treatment of Newt Gingrich. If you read some older threads, you can see that only a year or so ago, he was widely reviled as a RINO here. Now, all of a sudden, he has become almost above reproach. Both positions are too extreme, but this site seems really dumb when it flip-flops on someone like that.

5) The Palin cult of personality was obnoxious. I like her as a person, but this site seemed out of touch with reality when, in 2010, people were acting like it was a shoe-in that she would be president in 2013.

6) The anti-Mormon junk is obnoxious. It’s one thing to allow Mormonism to be deservedly criticized, but it’s another thing to make anti-Mormonism a semi-official site policy. There is a reason why public figures won’t touch this site with a ten foot pole, and the condoned anti-Mormonism by people like Colofornian and Elsie is a large part of that reason. You can have a site dedicated to trashing Mormons or a site where mainstream public figures like Tony Snow post, but not both. I sure as Hell would prefer having the latter.

7) The anti-Catholicism on this site is also obnoxious. It’s not as obvious as the anti-Mormonism, but it is noticeable in the way the religion forum is moderated. There is no reason posters like presently no screen name and Quix should be allowed to post the way they do. However, most of this has subsided due to the fact that, because of the decrease in site activity, the religion forum is half-dead.

8) On the topic of Mitt Romney: I’d like it if the site allowed people to support or not support Romney equally. We all know that Romney is bad, but this is a question of strategy not principles. Either position should be acceptable.

9) As has been noted on this thread before, the whole viking kitties celebrating a zot thing has become ridiculous. Unless it’s a genuine troll, there is no reason to childishly celebrate the zotting of a freeper.

10) The suck-ups on this site are also obnoxious. I have no idea why grown adults feel the need to score brownie points by sucking up to Jim Robinson. We can all like Jim Rob, but we don’t need to worship him or suck up to him like he’s a dictator or we’re teachers’ pets.

So, although I love this site, it has some avoidable problems that are leading to its fundraising problems. If this post leads to a zot, so be it, but due to where this site has been headed, I’m going to take a break from posting for a while and maybe forever. I’ll still lurk and I may respond to comments on this post, but aside from that, I’ll be gone for a while. It was nice while it lasted guys.

it’s been a really long time since I posted. I stopped after the Giuliani purge a long time ago. I used to be a regular Freeper and post articles and comment a lot ...I had FRiends here. Then the Guliani purge. Really this was nothing compared to that. If anyone posted a positive article on Rudy dozens of the same attack dogs would rip Rudy supporters. It was the same thing one pack of purists could not spew enough venom. It got so bad that I guess Jim just decided to end it all by having the famous bug zapper thread where lots and lots of cool posters were zotted while the anti-Rudy mob just kept cheering. I’m not sure why I wasn’t zotted but I didn’t opus out or anything I just left and thought I’d come back but never really did.
Well I guess it worked. The cool kids beat the shit out of the Rudy supporters got them zotted and then cheered while they were shown the door. I don’t think FR was ever really the same after that. Go back to that thread and see how many good Freepers were zotted, it’s lot’s and lot’s.
Well Rudy didn’t even try to run in so-con states and when he couldn’t win FL he was done. That left McCain who couldn’t punch himself out of wet paper bag and he got mopped up by the hopey changy fraud.
Had Rudy been the nominee during the crash he would have prolly beaten obama. Voters knew he could handle a crisis and he could also fight back unlike the hapless McCaine. But we’ll never know.
The SAME argument that was used against Guliani by the Purists is now being used against Romney. That a moderate Repub is WORSE then a a democrat because he’s a trojan horse ..slow poison... blah ...blah ...blah socialist...abortionist...blah blah the country and the GOP would be better off being taught a lesson...blah...blah.
Well the Purists got EXACTLY what they wanted. A FOR REAL,FOR REAL hard core leftist/feminist American hating, anti-capitalist who wants to “fundamentally change” this country.
Well it’s working. He’s willing to ruin the economic lives of a generation to reach the dims goal of some bizarre utopia where where we live on 15nth century technology ...windmills and solar.
Have jack booted thugs running the EPA who want to “crucify” energy producers or anyone else who get’s in their way.....have any of you read about the obama enemies list who want to blackmail doners to the GOP?
Have mandated health care which was drafted by Nancy Pelosi.
We had a worthless trillion dollar stimulus drafted by Nancy Pelosi.
We now Krugman economic plan that we can never tax too much nor spend too much nor regulate enough.
There is no problem that can’t be solved by an army of bureaucrats with unlimited powers with a billion dollars of taxpayer money.
TSA thugs assaulting crippled children and little old ladies in wheelchairs.
Trample over the fundamental over the right of freedom of religion and if a peep is raised hysterically scream you’re declaring a “War on Woman” in fact make everything a “War on Woman”....a budget...student loans...you name it.
Sotomeyer more hard core feminests on courts.
And in his own words when he thought the mike was off “JUST WAIT TILL AFTER THE ELECTION”!!!!!!!
jeez! then he and michelle and nancy pelosi and kathryn seblelious can REALLY start kicking the shit out of us.

This was all just the warm up.

Well I have personally suffered under these maniacs. In 08 job was gone and at 50 years old I’m standing in line with my resume in a stupid suit behind 500 other guys. I’ve burned through my savings sold my car and have had to take shitty job after shitty job. I was making more money at 25. ..and then to get a job it was easy just ask around....now it’s ...well. I’m not gonna get these years back.

To those who say Guliani or Bush or Romney would be the same or worse than obama have not personally suffered under this regime ..their retired or wealthy or who knows... I’m not sure if their posts are parody or clueless ..some even seem right out of DU. When you get far enough out there it can be hard to tell what side you’re on. ...but they really seem pretty far left in wanting to “punish”...people who don’t think like them. They call Guliani and Romney marxists!! Has even one of them looked up the definition of Marxism or socialism??? Or is it a smear they use just like the left cries “racism” or “gay basher” to silence opposition?

There is a huge difference between Romney and a hard core like obama. At least we can hold Romney’s feet to the fire like we did W’s during the Miers fiasco. With obama all you’re gonna get is a boot in the face.

So when Romney say’s “hold on a little longer” “I’ll build the Keystone pipeline myself”

Heck I wanna give the guy a chance. .....NO WAY it could be worse....but that’s just me and I ain’t gonna change any minds here....bye

Jim, I don't remember ever pinging you before, but I wish I would have pinged you to my original comment on this thread. Respectfully, here is what I said if you are interested:

Well 2DV, I finished reading this gnormous thread and have come to the following conclusion:

Jim might as well give up on FR. It's days of remaining life are few in number.

Because there are literally hundreds of individuals who can take a couple of hundred dollars, buy a used server off E-Bay and Shazaam! -- there will be hundreds of newer, better FRs.

And each and every one of them will immediately get ALL of the members currently contributing to, or freeloading from, FR to come over and sign up. These transferring individuals will all be able to sign-up at every one of the hundreds of newer, better FRs because -- they won't have to contribute any real money -- the operating costs at every site will be so low.

Advertisers are guaranteed to fight each other to sign up to advertise at these newer, better FRs because -- well just because they will! Everybody knows they will!

And everyone will get along wonderfully with each other at all of these wondrous new sites? After all the only reason people don't get along on FR is because of Jim and his silly "principles", that are forced on everyone by his jack-booted, brown-shirted "Mods". The new sites will be la-la lands of smiling, happy customers, singing "cumbaya" and "If I could buy the world a Coke"!

So Jim might as well accept it and either give up and shut down FR completely, or accept the fact that FR will just become a backwater hobby site for him and John, with a few "far right wing crazies" posting about "Principles" and other things nobody really cares about when push comes to shove.

As best I can guess from reading all the posters on this thread, Jim has maybe 2-3 weeks before all the new and improved, "one-day to setup" FR sites blast their way onto the Innertoobs, and zoom their way up the web-site ratings charts.

Soooo, either FR and Jim's efforts will soon die, or .... there are a lot of whining, complaining, wannabees who would rather just keep FR around, reading its content without contributing a cent, and spending their time telling Jim how they could do it better, faster, cheaper, with high quality -like the old days, yadda, yadda, yadda, and who will NEVER, EVER get around to actually firing up those hundreds of newer, better FRs.

But, surely they really, really mean to get those $200 sites fired up pronto, don't you think 2DV?

Let's keep our eye out for these new FRs. If you spot them first, let me know, and I'll do the same for you, ok?
