DES MOINES A month before the Republican nominating contest opens here, former Speaker Newt Gingrich holds a substantial lead among voters who say they are likely to participate in the Iowa caucuses, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News poll.
Mr. Gingrich, whose presidential candidacy has steadily surged in recent weeks after a series of televised debates, won the support of 31 percent of Republicans and independents who say they will definitely or probably attend the Iowa caucuses on Jan. 3.
His Republican rivals are trailing significantly, with 17 percent supporting former Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts, 16 percent backing Representative Ron Paul of Texas and 11 percent choosing Gov. Rick Perry of Texas. The rest of the partys candidates are in single digits, with Representative Michele Bachmann of Minnesota at 9 percent and former Senator Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania at 4 percent.

Hmmm? Isn’t Cain still on the ballot?
Wouldn’t it be a kick if Cain won the actual vote?
Newt just received his expected Cain bonus. Too bad for Romney, shut out again.
The undecideds are deciding....
It will be interesting to see if the overly loud Paulistas draw more that 10%, this time.
Anything is possible.
Doubtful, I would guess.
A sizable chunk of conservative Iowans are social conservatives and wouldn’t care for the admissions Cain himself has made about Ginger White.
Gingrich has a bad record personally, but does have a backpack stuffed with governmental experience and issue knowledge.
If someone is too bothered by Gingrich’s personal history, they could choose someone other than Cain in order to register that.
HA!
Newts almost got more support than the next two combined !
lol
The liberals' and Rockefeller Republicans' campaign to "destroy Barry Goldwater as a member of the human race" will look like a love fest of Goldwater and his admirers compared to what is in store for Gingrich.
Through it all Gingrich must be honest and forthright starting with IMO exactly why he favors massive benefits for taxpayer-subsidized ILLEGAL alien "cheap" labor -- likely all of whom committed fraud at one time or another and they get excused while citizens serve prison time. It don't make a lick of sense. (The ILLEGAL alien pays a $100 fine? Great! Then let the citizens out of prison for $100.)
Good post #7.
Interesting that this is the second poll in two days that Perry has crawled back into double digits in Iowa. Could it be that he is beginning to get a second look?
Funny... I remember some of the “experts” here at FR predicting Newt would fall in the polls because of his immigration answer at the debates. I don’t think I’ll take their predictions very seriously any more, especialy the one that says Newt would get destroyed in the general.
