I will not make a habit of defending Gov. Rick Perry. I promise.
It would not be in either of our best interest -- certain to cause some of his supporters on the right to question further his conservative credentials, and most assuredly making my liberal friends wonder about my sanity.
For some it was bad enough that I recently commended our governor for his stance on providing a college education (at in-state tuition prices) for noncitizen children of illegal immigrants. It's one of the few things Perry and I agree on.
But the latest brouhaha surrounding suggestions of Perry's racial insensitivity forces me once again to rise to his defense.
Believe me, as a native Texan who happens to be black and whose roots go back 150 years in the Lone Star State, I know racism as well as anyone in this country. And I've never been one to shy away from denouncing those who exhibit racist attitudes or tolerate bigoted behavior. For several years, I taught a course at Texas Christian University called "Race, Gender and the Mass Media."
Combine that experience with decades of observing American politics, and perhaps no one is more qualified than I to make this pronouncement: Rick Perry is not a racist. That is, no more than any other American shaped by his/her national, regional, cultural, ethnic and religious influences.
Let's put this notion to rest immediately because, as we say in Texas, that dog won't hunt, not even on the plains of northwest Texas where Perry shared a lease on 1,000 acres.

Yes he is, but your entire purpose on this thread and others is merely smears. State who you are supporting.
Just your remarks have trashed both Perry and Texans. Your smears and insults have branded you as irrelevant.
Stop the name calling and insults.
Speak for yourself. If you actually live in TX and don’t like it, you are free to leave. You won’t be missed, it is a big state.
Yes he is. Who do you support? Hey be a man or woman and state who the candidate is, since you are highly trashing mine.
Yes, Cain jumped on the racist story and refused to back down or apologize to Perry.
AS a person who should know (the one who posted this thread) Perry is not a racist.
Cain is a mysterious guy whose motives I kind of tend to question.
He’s never been on so much as a City Council. Yes, he was a good businessman and I admire that, and yes, I believe he is conservative on social issues.
But, no, I don’t think he is well versed on foreign policy. His tax program is catchy but would it fly? And does he even have the political savvy to make it fly?
He’s never been in politics. It’s different from running a business. People do question and criticize you in ways they don’t do to the boss.
If we want to elect another president based on nothing but rhetoric that appeals to us, I guess we can, but I think it would be a mistake.
Who are you referring to? This is very ugly charges and you need to post sources and links for these comments or don’t make them. Regardless of whom this person is.
its called the primaries for a reason
Conservatives don’t encourage illegals.
I will not name the person who used that term. He/she knows who he/she is. I reported it to the mods who deleted the post. I don’t have to report to YOU.
How about you and your Mom jeans just go home?
Perry is a military veteran, pro life, pro second amendment, pro 10th amendment lower taxes, less government, pro business Liberal Communist, isn’t he? /s
well he’s certainly pro illegal immigration. Heck he’ll even give all those ‘criminals’ work permits so they can keep the jobs they took from Americans.
I've rarely seen such shameful tactics used on FreeRepublic.
Easy to sit back and lob mudballs from your position on the sideline, isn’t it?
The entire Texas legislature made a decision to help manage a problem they can’t control and you want to say that every one of them is something other than a Conservative.
Yeah, right. Whatever.
well you can try but I heard the debate
He doesn’t support a fence on the border, only a “strategic” fence. Whatever that means.
He also supports subsidizing their college education.
He also supports work permits.
aka he supports illegal immigration
It has to do with the senators and other RINOs they elect...who cause problems for us all..IMO.
Snowe and Collins are big trouble makers!
Can’t you guys ever see anything beyond politics? How dreary life must be for you. Maine - despite its politicians (and its current governor has been praised here) - is one of the glories of America. I, personally, love all the states. Each one has something wonderful to offer.
How sad it must be to only admire one state - the one you just happen to live in.
