I will not make a habit of defending Gov. Rick Perry. I promise.
It would not be in either of our best interest -- certain to cause some of his supporters on the right to question further his conservative credentials, and most assuredly making my liberal friends wonder about my sanity.
For some it was bad enough that I recently commended our governor for his stance on providing a college education (at in-state tuition prices) for noncitizen children of illegal immigrants. It's one of the few things Perry and I agree on.
But the latest brouhaha surrounding suggestions of Perry's racial insensitivity forces me once again to rise to his defense.
Believe me, as a native Texan who happens to be black and whose roots go back 150 years in the Lone Star State, I know racism as well as anyone in this country. And I've never been one to shy away from denouncing those who exhibit racist attitudes or tolerate bigoted behavior. For several years, I taught a course at Texas Christian University called "Race, Gender and the Mass Media."
Combine that experience with decades of observing American politics, and perhaps no one is more qualified than I to make this pronouncement: Rick Perry is not a racist. That is, no more than any other American shaped by his/her national, regional, cultural, ethnic and religious influences.
Let's put this notion to rest immediately because, as we say in Texas, that dog won't hunt, not even on the plains of northwest Texas where Perry shared a lease on 1,000 acres.

Is that a racist remark?
I'm backing Gov. Perry who is a STRONG conservative.
You really are beyond the pale (or is that racist too?).
Nice lie. You'll have to do better than that.
This is demonstrably false. But the truth doesn't stop you.
You didn’t answer the question. Are you afraid of a Conservative Black man as President ?
As for calling La Raza Rick a “strong Conservative” ? Now that’s REALLY “beyond the pale.” A hoot and a half !
Look who's talking !
Texans on FR DO have a habit of insulting every state in the union except their own.
Some of them recently slammed Maine - one of the most beautiful states in the country - when I dared to say I leased land there one year. I’m still scratching my head as to why. I guess they don’t like Maine’s government but it still is an amazingly beautiful state.
What you said. Thank God Tennessee kicked AL Gore to the curb in 2000. That says something for the state. You can’t admonish an entire state just because somebody says they have their heart. That isn’t true.
I don’t blame you for feeling hurt and dismayed..Seems a lot of Texas bashing is going on here, too.
God Bless These United States Of America.
We could all use a little more civility in our posts.
Maine has one of the best Governors in the country at present... can’t say that about Texas.
I try to vacation in Maine every year. I’m afraid I don’t know much about their government. I assume it’s a typically liberal northeast state - like my own.
But it’s heaven on earth in summertime.
I loved it when Tennessee gave the bird to Gore. Spoke highly of that beautiful state.
He is giving preferential treatment to people based upon their race. He is also penalizing a different set of people based on their race.
Perry is a racist.
Perry isn’t a conservative.
It cost him everything. You notice he only wanted 2 counties in FLA recounted and NO military ballots. F-in weasel.

God Bless you honey. This day is set aside for God and Nascar. Relax, worship our Holy Father and thank him for all we have. It is a hard time but we can endure. Praise Him
They elected an all-GOP state government for the first time in almost 50 years last November. Paul LePage is a wonder. An unapologetic anti-PC Conservative loathed by the establishment. Literally came up from abject poverty and spoke French before he learned English (though he is Maine born and bred), a true success story. I’d rather see LePage as President than the phony from Texas. He’d make heads explode.
Amen!
I saw it coming. And a long time coming it was. Exactly 30 years after the voters repudiated his equally odious and hypocritical daddy, who had squatted in Congress for 32 years. If our voters hadn’t woken up, we’d have been saddled with Manbearpig in the White House.
