Pima County Sheriff Clarence W. Dupnik, who is overseeing the investigation of Saturday's mass shooting that critically wounded Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D), became an overnight sensation with his remarks that the "vitriol" in today's political discourse contributed to the incident and that Arizona has become "a mecca for prejudice and bigotry."
Dupnik's name was a top search term on Twitter Saturday night, with many of the tweets thanking him for his candor, and overnight, a Facebook page titled "Clarence Dupnik is my Hero" sprung up.
In a news conference Saturday evening, Dupnik condemned the "atmosphere of hatred and bigotry" that he said has gripped the nation and suggested that the 22-year-old suspect being held in the shooting was mentally ill and therefore more susceptible to overheated messages in the media.
"There's reason to believe that this individual may have a mental issue. And I think people who are unbalanced are especially susceptible to vitriol," he said during his televised remarks. "People tend to pooh-pooh this business about all the vitriol we hear inflaming the American public by people who make a living off of doing that. That may be free speech, but it's not without consequences."

Dupnik failed to protect the community form this known threat.
Even the college barred Jared Lee Lougner from the campus.
Funny, when my “vitriol meter” is low, I simply dial into the Washington Post, MSNBC, the NYT, or any idiot (read: democrat) politician.

Let the idiot keep talking..he is sealing his own fate. He already has a lawyer, he KNEW this gunman was dangerous and did nothing to stop it. I am waiting for the moment that HE is indicted for this

Yassir, his incompetence seems to me to be culpable in this incident a lot more than the Tea Party or Rush Limbaugh, the man must be a fool.
Sometimes you gotta seize the moment, exploit your position and the public’s trust, while standing in the blood of innocent victims.
He probably fashions it’s courageous in his own mind, he obviously has no shame -that is crystal clear.
I hope that Sheriffs can be impeached.
The sheriff used twice as much vitriol as that he condemned.
He just amped it up with Megan Kelly and she even asked him as the Sheriff on this case should he be saying the things he is saying; clearly he is loving the attention and taking advantage of it to make his left wing opinion known.
I guess I missed it but where is the evidence that this guy was motivated by vitriol or anything other than the desire for attention?
