Pima County Sheriff Clarence W. Dupnik, who is overseeing the investigation of Saturday's mass shooting that critically wounded Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D), became an overnight sensation with his remarks that the "vitriol" in today's political discourse contributed to the incident and that Arizona has become "a mecca for prejudice and bigotry."
Dupnik's name was a top search term on Twitter Saturday night, with many of the tweets thanking him for his candor, and overnight, a Facebook page titled "Clarence Dupnik is my Hero" sprung up.
In a news conference Saturday evening, Dupnik condemned the "atmosphere of hatred and bigotry" that he said has gripped the nation and suggested that the 22-year-old suspect being held in the shooting was mentally ill and therefore more susceptible to overheated messages in the media.
"There's reason to believe that this individual may have a mental issue. And I think people who are unbalanced are especially susceptible to vitriol," he said during his televised remarks. "People tend to pooh-pooh this business about all the vitriol we hear inflaming the American public by people who make a living off of doing that. That may be free speech, but it's not without consequences."

Even the college barred Jared Lee Lougner from the campus.
Funny, when my “vitriol meter” is low, I simply dial into the Washington Post, MSNBC, the NYT, or any idiot (read: democrat) politician.

The sheriff used twice as much vitriol as that he condemned.
He just amped it up with Megan Kelly and she even asked him as the Sheriff on this case should he be saying the things he is saying; clearly he is loving the attention and taking advantage of it to make his left wing opinion known.
I guess I missed it but where is the evidence that this guy was motivated by vitriol or anything other than the desire for attention?

Unlikely there is any evidence. The shooter is a whack job. Barney Fife has no business grabbing this stage. He is a shameless, self righteous, ignorant man.
This is classic CYA. The Sheriff is going to be found as one of the contributors to this event. He had knowledge of this murderers beliefs and mental instability. He did nothing to keep the public safe from him. As time goes on this guy is going to be the poster child for lazy police work.
The sheriff is a Democrat. That is why he continues to politicize it. I wish someone in the media would point out that this Loughner is a leftist with favorite books such as the Communist Manifesto and Mein Kampf.

He is a Sheriff and therefore a politician. Many, but not all, of them are not qualified to be in law enforcement.

“Vitriol” is any speech that doesn’t agree with the socialist rhetoric or the leftist agenda. Arizona’s governor is guilty of “vitriol” to them for wanting to enforce the law! Don't count on the FBI reveling this.....I have no confidence the truth will come out. Obviously the Tucson Sheriff's Dept whom at this point may not even have much control over the Investigation won't revel the truth. We may well need a whistle blower to come forward to tell us what the Sheriffs Dept. knew and when they knew it.
Maybe it's the one, where the prominent politician told his supporters the following (paraphrased):
1. If they bring a knife, you bring a gun.
