No $1B Budget Increase for NASA; Fate of Ares 1 Rocket Still Unclear
Space News ^ | 1/22/2010 | Amy Klamper

NASA will not be getting the $1 billion budget boost civil space advocates had hoped to see when President Barack Obama sends his 2011 spending proposal to Congress Feb. 1, requiring the U.S. space agency to make even tougher than expected choices about the future of its manned space program, according to sources with close ties to the administration. These sources declined to reveal the fate of NASA’s planned Ares 1 crew launch vehicle, which many observers see as a likely cancellation target, but they did say the budget proposal would fund a multibillion-dollar effort to foster development of commercial systems for ferrying astronauts to the international space station.

An independent panel concluded this past summer that NASA could not afford to develop the Ares 1 and a crew carrying capsule dubbed Orion without a significant budget increase, which the sources said is not in the offing for 2011

Meanwhile, Obama will request budget increases for environmental satellites, education programs, and research and technology development, these sources said.

I think we should work on being able to put humans in suspended animation, and being able to take them out of it safely.

Better propulsion from working prototype to becoming efficient would take a while. Right now rockets are the best thing we have. We could only test the Orion concept out in space.

$1 billion to the space program or DOD would actually net something. Possibly help create jobs.

$1 Billion to BO’s social programs is spit on a hot griddle.

“The US will be hitching rides with Russia, China, India and maybe even Japan I guess.”

That would be the best case - more than likely US space wanna bes would have to be trained at the host country's expense - but why should they? They have plenty of their own citizens to chose from, and who are more politically reliable.

US manned space flight will only continue in LEO until shuttle funds run out. After that nothing. For a very long time - generations maybe.

Any new administration in some far future - long after the Hussein Dynasty passes into history - will have to begin again from scratch, with goals beyond going to the Moon or Mars - long colonized by other nations.

This is just a harbinger of things to come.

Wait until the FY 2011 DOD Budget comes out.

Also, in about a week or two the 2010 QDR Quadrennial Defense Review, will be out. This will list changed priorities etc since Obummer has come into office for the long term.

Part of it, I think, is that muslims don’t want anyone on their Moon.

Well isn’t that just great. Shuttle set to retire in a couple of years and no new man rated luancher or vehicle. Looks like the USA is out of the manned space flight business. Way to go Obama! I wonder what all the folks at JSC in Houston are going to do?

Did anyone really expect Obama to be in favor of space exploration? He’s a Commie bent on taking the US down.

Probably either retire or hit the unemployment line. ZerO has no room for real achievers.

Thousands of newly unemployed engineers, technicians, and support workers will soon appear from the ashes of the space program this year.

"ZerO has no room for real achievers"

Lol, isn't that the truth! We are lucky that he such an incompetent, were he really tallented we'd be in big trouble. Yeah he can do a lot of damage but with a little luck we can recover in a few decades. Clinton, Bush, Obama man have we had a bad run or what?

Trillions every where else.

NASA gets shafted... again.

Obama is a LIAR SUPREME!!!!!

The nations that lead on the frontiers dictate the course of human history.

The next President will set course properly for NASA.

Obama has to go, or this nation will suffer terribly for not TRULY investing in the future, all Obama does is flush the money down the toilet.

After the Shuttle stops flying, the massive cash wasted on that and the ISS will simply vanish from NASA's budget quick as you can say "reparations". Thanks sonofstrangelove and KevinDavis.

“Private companies such as Microsoft,Apple and other technical companies have so much to offer. “

What does a software company and a hardware importer have to do with actual aerospace R&D? Neither are really “technology companies”.
