Hotter than the sun - Researchers directly observe Alfvén waves, which keep the corona sizzling

HEAT WAVE
The Swedish 1-m Solar Telescope captured this image of an approximately 8,000 kilometer by 8,000 km region on the sun’s surface. Scientists observed Alfvén waves oscillating from the bright spot near the middle of the image, a highly magnetized area.D. JessMagnetic waves theorized to transfer heat from the surface of the sun to its atmosphere have been directly observed for the first time, researchers report in the March 20 Science.

Astrophysicists have long puzzled over why the sun’s atmosphere is millions of degrees hotter than the surface of the sun itself. “It’s counterintuitive — when you hold your hands in front of a fire, it’s hottest closest to the flames,” says David Jess, an astrophysicist at Queen’s University Belfast, in Northern Ireland, and a study coauthor.

The magnetic waves, called Alfvén waves, are considered the most plausible explanation for the transfer of so much energy from the sun’s surface to its atmosphere. First theorized by Nobel laureate Hannes Alfvén in 1942, the waves could carry energy several hundred thousand kilometers from the sun’s surface to the corona.

First theorized by Nobel laureate Hannes Alfvén in 1942, the waves could carry energy several hundred thousand kilometers from the sun’s surface to the corona.

The new observation “is quite interesting,” says astrophysicist Craig DeForest of the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colo. “It means that we can get to the root of what’s heating the corona.”

Alfvén waves move along the sun’s magnetic fields like “waves traveling along a string,” Jess explains. The waves are created by magnetic reconnections, disturbances in the sun’s magnetic field when magnetic lines twist, break...

I prefer a pair of wooden matches.

If even a portion of the billions of dollars spent “researching” and lobbying for the man-made CO2 “global warming” Gore baloney were instead spent researching the link between solar processes and the earth’s climate, we might have some real answers.

Unfortunately, it is virtually a thought crime to examine whether changes in the sun can influence changes in climate on earth. We are headed for a severe food crisis if we are at the beginning of another Maunder Minimum. Probably most of the socialists want the world to be unprepared so most people starve. The elites want to live in 21st century luxury while ruling peasants who live in squalor - it would give them a sense of power. That is what blaming modern civilization for natural changes in the earth’s climate comes down to.

Not to people who've earned a living with heat and temperature.

In physical terms, "heat" is defined in terms of energy per particle.   If an ion's moving really fast then it's 'hot', and if upper atmospheric particles can accelerate at higher altitudes (nothing in the way to stop them), then the temperature of the air (what there is of it) is hot.  Same thing here on earth.

I like Corona, nearly ice cold and with lime. It kills that aftertaste.

I agree with you about that. I really didn’t like that line, either. People don’t understand what temperature is. I love to tell people that the temperature of the gas in a florescent bulb is over 10,000, and watch their faces. That is the way I’ve addressed this same question with some people I’ve been in discussion with.

You give the Socialists too much credit for intelligence, though the elites would like to rid the world of the "eaters" whom it thinks of as squatters, in their park, this does not make them particularly smart.

Thing of Prince Charles and his father. They don't qualify as even educated idiots.

And I don't think the elites, who think more on Class than anyone in the West, really want the world filled with squalor, but rather the peace of a common grave.

And take heart about the thought crime thing, with regard to what is now notably the longest Solar Minimum in more than a century. Facts are stubborn things.

ah yes, an enjoyable beer but I usually pass on the fruit. I was told long ago that the citrus was used to work off the rust from the cap.

But in this case, the ideal ignition for a stogy is a pair of wooden matches IMO.
