Excavations reveal ancient Egyptians were master dam builders

New Delhi, Dec 3 (ANI): Archaeologists have discovered the remains of an ancient dam, dating back to some 4,000 years, in Upper Egypt, proving theories that ancient Egyptians were master dam builders.
Discovered by an Egyptian-French archaeological team, which has been working in Luxor since March, the ancient dam was found a few meters away from the Karnak Temple in the city, some 500 km south of Cairo.
"The 230-meter long dam was built during the age of the Middle Kingdom (of ancient Egypt) to protect the temple from the Nile flood," Xinhua quoted Zahi Hawass, Secretary-General of the Egyptian Supreme Council of Antiquities, as saying.
According to Hawass, the finding is of grave importance as it proved that the ancient Egyptians were good at building dams.
The discovery will also revive interest in the ancient Egyptian city, where, it was believed by some archaeologists, that nothing of great importance would be found again.
"The team had also unearthed the relics of a Roman bath built in the first century AD and a clay jar containing 316 coins from different historical periods," said Hawass. (ANI)

I find Egyptian stuff fascinating, but,,,,,,,,, “grave importance?” I don’t think so!
I hope too much money isn’t being spent, cuz when you consider the dire poverty in that country,,,,

That sounds more like a dike or levee than a dam. Does anyone have pictures they could post?

If he (Hawass) wasn’t so short, I might like him. He has to lose that accent, though. It’s so thick I can cut it with a butter knife.

Nope, it’s just a little joke on me by Blam. I’d missed it the first time through because the pic hadn’t loaded. ;’)

I remember watching a Discovery-type show on Joseph of the Bible. They found a tomb down in a Jewish section/town in Egypt with a mosaic of a guy with red hair (how the Egyptians portrayed Jews) and the man was wearing a colorful robe (also Jewish - and perhaps a play on “Joseph’s coat of many colors” when he was a young man).
The figure also wears a ring with the King’s seal (or whatever it was) - and indicating that the person was of high rank. No bones were found - although they said when a tomb was sacked all the good stuff is taken - but the theives don’t take the bones. (Joseph’s bones were taken out in the Exodus).
And - up in the mountains (near the tomb I think) there is a place called “Joseph’s Dam” (or something) from the translation. They think prehaps it was built on the orders of Josepth for the impending 7-year drought. (I tried to search this on-line just now but couldn’t come up with anything).
