The UFO Phenomenon - Seeing Is Believing (Peter Jennings tonight - Live Thread)
ABC News ^ | Feb. 24, 2005

Posted on 02/24/2005 3:55:40 PM PST by traumer

Almost 50 percent of Americans, according to recent polls, and millions of people elsewhere in the world believe that UFOs are real. For many it is a deeply held belief.

For decades there have been sightings of UFOs by millions and millions of people. It is a mystery that only science can solve, and yet the phenomenon remains largely unexamined. Most of the reporting on this subject by the mainstream media holds those who claim to have seen UFOs up to ridicule.

On Feb. 24, "Peter Jennings Reporting: UFOs — Seeing Is Believing" takes a fresh look at the UFO phenomenon. "As a journalist," says Jennings, "I began this project with a healthy dose of skepticism and as open a mind as possible. After almost 150 interviews with scientists, investigators and with many of those who claim to have witnessed unidentified flying objects, there are important questions that have not been completely answered — and a great deal not fully explained."

"Peter Jennings Reporting: UFOs — Seeing Is Believing" airs Thursday, Feb. 24 from 8-10 p.m. ET on ABC. The program will be broadcast in High Definition.

This two-hour primetime special reports on the entire scope of the UFO experience — from the first famous sighting by Kenneth Arnold in 1947 to the present day. The program draws on interviews with police officers, pilots, military personnel, scientists and ordinary citizens who give extraordinary accounts of encounters with the unexplained. Also included are the voices of professional skeptics about UFOs, including scientists who are leading the search for life forms beyond Earth elsewhere in the universe.

The program explores the facts behind the enduring mystery of the incident at Roswell, N.M., and looks into the strange stories of alien abductions. Among the UFO cases presented:

Minot Air Force Base, N.D., October 1968 — Sixteen airmen on the ground and the crew of an airborne B-52 witness a massive unidentified object hovering near the base.

Phoenix, March 1997 — Hundreds witness a huge triangular craft moving slowly over the city.

St. Clair County, Ill., January 2000 — Police officers in five adjoining towns all independently report witnessing a giant craft with multiple bright lights moving silently across the sky at a very low altitude.

Today if you report a UFO to the U.S. government you will be informed that the Air Force conducted a 22-year investigation that ended in 1969 and concluded that UFOs are not a threat to national security and are of no scientific interest. But as one of the world's leading theoretical physicists says in the program, "You simply cannot dismiss the possibility that some of these UFO sightings are actually sightings from some object created by … a civilization perhaps millions of years ahead of us in technology."

"Peter Jennings Reporting: UFOs — Seeing Is Believing" is produced by PJ Productions and Springs Media for ABC News. Mark Obenhaus and Tom Yellin are the executive producers.

Not likely soon. Too many irons in the fire and too tedious for me to dig up. Just not my priority. You are able to do such research as well as I am, or close to it.

Perhaps . . . I don't remember . . . but perhaps B4Ranch could dig up some references for very well investigated--and quickly--mutilation cases.

Thanks for the frank answers.

I don't doubt that your experience was vivid and seemed real. But you'd agree with me, I think, that your prior interest in OBE's and lucid dreaming provides a basis of suggestion out of which a quasi-hypnotic (or hypnagogic) state could develop.

I wouldn't be inclined to think that what you experienced had any basis outside of your body/brain.

Let me relate (briefly!) an experience I had. After having all four of my wisdom teeth removed at once, I was taking Darvon for pain for a couple of days. My gums became infected and my cheeks swelled up to the size of grapefruits on both sides. I felt a lot of pain. I remember lying on my living room couch and being in a state of quite excruciating pain. Then something strange happened. I felt my consciousness start to slip downwards, through my neck and into my chest! It seemed to really be happening, that my self had re-located to my chest. The state persisted for a few minutes, at least.

What happened? I was in severe pain in spite of being doped up, the source of the pain was my face (right next to my brain), and I wanted out! So I hallucinated a way out, with my conscious self sliding down below the source of the pain and so into pain-relief position.

This seemed to really happen. Clearly, it didn't. After a few minutes, I snapped into a more awake state of consciousness, and there I was, right behind my eyes, as usual. (smile)

Wow thanks for the link. I had one episode a couple of years ago that bothered the hell out of me. I could swear when I woke up some demon was staring at me, and sort of floated up to the ceiling, and wouldn't go away until I snarled.

I don't believe in all this abduction stuff, and have always been really bothered by the incident. This article hits the nail on the head of my experience.

Well, we don't see unfinished ones. So nobody ever got tired making one? Nobody ever got a cell phone call and had to leave it undone? There was never a sudden lightning storm when they were busy? If there were alot or even a few unfinished crop circles, you can bet your arse the professional debunkers would be waving it in our face day and night.

Good logic there. I've never seen a UFO but I've seen plenty of inexplicable photos of crop circles. Some are frauds, big deal, New York Times has lots of frauds too

I don't disagree with a thing you said. But at some point we all make our choices as to the best available explanation of what we experience, and we all have to admit our biases, too. Materialism is a bias, one you might argue is an eminently sensible one :-) But on the whole, I admire your inquisitive approach to factual issues, and think it is a good one.

Well, did it hurt less when your consciousness descended to your heart? Did you feel good there? Did you feel worse when you went back behind your eyes? Maybe it was more real than you think! At least it sounds like it might have been useful!

So maybe all the UFO folks voted for Bush.

Well, before the election, according to Weekly World News (The Paper of Record - they've supplanted the NY Times!) aliens did come out for Bush. Complete with photo!

So either you've read the paper, you're ahead of the curve, or you just made a plain lucky guess!

In your defense, I can't believe I actually posted this!

Hope your evening is good!

I will say for everyone reading your description you do not sound like a whack job. On the contrary you do sound like someone that is quite reflective and perceptive about your experience. You do not sound alarmist nor hysterical. I think you had this experience, what it was I do not know, but you sound congruent to me.

BTW stay away from OOBE. You are not protected spiritually doing it.

...at some point we all make our choices as to the best available explanation of what we experience...

Indeed. In the end, we all die not knowing much about anything, and also not knowing whether what we think we know is actually true. I'm for tolerance with respect to fundamental beliefs, so long as those beliefs don't advocate action or inaction that leads to the harm of people of good will. True, it's not always easy to know what will or won't harm people of good will in the long run, but we do right if we try hard to figure that out at all times and in all places.

Best regards...

OK. Shows over.

In general, I thought it was a pretty fair treatment. The people who see them are certainly convinced.

Skeptics are skeptics, but there is good science to be very, very skeptical about the whole issue.

If there was anything revealed tonight, it might have been an agenda. MSM coverage of this sort of thing in a scientific or even slightly pseudoscientific mode is somewhat of a breakthrough.
So, maybe by 2020, when people have gray dudes living next door and they ask "How come you didn't tell us sooner about the Orions" the guv and the media will say "Heck, we told you back in 2008 but you weren't listening".

Similar to the announcements of life on Mars which happen today then are refuted tomorrow but will be re-announced next week.

This single story of life somewhere else would be the most astounding story ever to come to light. No doubt there are powerful forces that don't want it to spin out of control.

If they're doing circles, they fly out between Travis and Vallejo, I guess, then swing back west, north of Fairfield, past Vacaville, make their turn around Dixon, and head back in. While big, the C-5s give the illusion of just hanging in the air.

I've heard that the Fairfield/Suisun area is something of a hotbed of UFO sightings. I wonder if people are seeing C-5s. You ever hear of any?

I think I was so stunned when the consciousness lowering (as opposed to raising!) seemed to happen, that I was distracted from my pain. But, as I recall (it was a long time ago), the pain returned after a minute or two and terminated the hallucination.

Pain has a way of reminding us that we're living and that the world is real, at least for as long as we're in it.

You gotta wonder...the media simply ignored/blacked out the phoenix 1997 lights event, even the local media to some degree iirc.
