Today is the anniversary of mankind's first powered flight, achieved at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina on 17 December 1903 by pioneer American aviators Wilbur and Orville Wright (1867-1912 and 1871-1948, respectively). The Wrights - Dayton, Ohio bicycle mechanics - become interested in aviation as an avocation and embarked on a systematic experimental program that eventually led to their extraordinary success - of which movable wing parts and a lightweight engine were the key elements. Prior To the powered flight, the brothers completed over one thousand glides from atop Big Kill Devil Hill. These flying skills were a crucial component of...

The lenses, which were described as a "blueish mass", were causing her discomfort that she attributed to dry eye and old age, British media reported after the case was published in the British Medical Journal on Jul 5. Eye specialists initially discovered 17 lenses "bound together by mucus", before a further examination revealed that another 10 lenses were stuck in the eye. Rupal Morjaria, a specialist trainee ophthalmologist who dealt with the case at Solihull Hospital near Birmingham, reportedly said: "We were really surprised that the patient didn’t notice it because it would cause quite a lot of irritation while...

Wednesday on MSNBC’s “The Rachel Maddow Show,” host Rachel Maddow reacted to news that James Hodgkinson, the now-deceased alleged shooter in an incident that has resulted in five people hospitalized, including House Majority Whip Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA), was a fan of her program. Maddow referenced a Hodgkinson letter to the editor that appeared in the July 29, 2012 edition of the Belleview (IL) News-Democrat, but denied having received correspondence Hodgkinson. “[H]e once submitted a letter to the editor that cited statistics about political donations that he says he heard on this TV show because he said he watched this...

It may look like a giant snooker ball, but this spherical capsule could save your life. When a natural disaster strikes, whether it is a tsunami or earthquake, there are very few places to find shelter. But now, The Survival Capsule - a personal safety system in the form of a giant ball - has been designed to combat this issue. This capsule, which features two small porthole windows so the occupants can see what is going on around them, was created to give individual groups and families more control of their survival in emergency situation than traditional 'safe houses.'...

You have given up your right to complain about Barack Obama’s amnesty plan. Just shut up. Stop complaining. You know why? Because you did not do the one thing that could stop it. You did not call your congressman despite me making it very easy for you to do so. I’m in Washington, D.C. right now. Last night I had several members of congress tell me that they’re barely hearing from anybody. So stop your bellyaching about amnesty if you can’t even be bothered to call. If you aren’t willing to call your congressman and demand he defund amnesty, stop...

I am down to my last nerve, as they say. Watching the news about the multiple scandals and how the residents of the beltway treat it all as no big deal infuriates me as I'm sure it does with many, many other American citizens. It is hard to prioritize the disgusting events we are witnessing, but I think one example might be the long overdue dismantling of the IRS. This is the agency that is being put in charge of every aspect of our lives from finance and savings to health care and they have the gall to admit they...

Some 1,000 years ago, the Vikings set off on a voyage to Notre Dame Bay in modern-day Newfoundland, Canada, new evidence suggests. The journey would have taken the Vikings, also called the Norse, from L'Anse aux Meadows on the northern tip of the same island to a densely populated part of Newfoundland and may have led to the first contact between Europeans and the indigenous people of the New World.

React To Contact, Break Contact and Insurgent Operational Planning I talked about Battle Drills awhile back. Recently Max Velocity talked about Reacting to Contact. We label the steps differently but basically do the same thing. I will get into it a bit but do not feel the need to write it from memory or get fancy paraphrasing FM 7-8. Either you know how to do it and I'm wasting my time or you don't and me writing about it for a couple paragraphs will not fix the problem so I'm wasting my time. For those without an Infantry or Special...

Here, you can thank those senators who voted yesterday against the destruction of the Second Amendment via phone, email, Twitter, and Facebook. These senators deserve our continual support. They acted as they should because "Upon taking office, senators-elect must swear or affirm that they will 'support and defend the Constitution.'" Even though the Second Amendment is quite clear to many Americans, as it succinctly states that "the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed," there are extremists who care nothing about our great nation's founding principles. But these pro-Second Amendment senators stepped up to...

Bethlehem’s PA governor, Abdel Fattah Hamayel, on Sunday issued an order banning Palestinian institutions in his district from having any direct contact with Israel. The order applies to all municipal and village councils in the Bethlehem area, as well as Palestinian NGOs and trade institutions. The governor justified the ban by arguing that Israeli authorities have been avoiding dealing with Palestinians through the Palestinian District Coordinating Office [DCO]. “In wake of repeated Israeli calls to deal directly with Palestinian municipalities and institutions and hold meetings and conferences with the Israeli side, it is forbidden to have direct contact or coordination...

Washington - The White House says the Obama administration has had no contact with the Muslim Brotherhood, the deeply conservative Islamic organization that constitutes the biggest organized opposition group in Egypt. White House spokesman Robert Gibbs told reporters Monday that before dealing with opposition groups the administration would want assurances that they adhere to the law, that they are non-violent and that they are willing to be part of a democratic process. Gibbs said there would be no contact with the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt unless those assurances were offered.

On page A3 of today’s Washington Post: Another liberal movement leader, Daily Kos blog founder Markos Moulitsas, said he “long ago” cut off contact with the White House. “It’s clear that they want to double down on their capitulation strategy,” he said in an e-mail. Those words are written in English, but I cannot seem to get them to make sense in that order. The staff of the leader of the free world, with the world’s most powerful bully pulpit, in service of a president whose persuasive and oratorical abilities are endlessly touted, find themselves needing the assistance of the...

Conservatives despise him. Many liberals remain stubbornly unimpressed. Now, even babies — sweet, lovable, barely sentient babies — have turned on President Obama, the man with whom they once invested so much hope. Though he tries time and again to connect with these impressionable young citizens, it is all in vain, for his overtures are met only with cold shoulders. Tiny, cold shoulders.

• Khaled Meshal says US 'not brave enough to do so openly' • Hamas leader praises Russian president for meeting him The United States is sending a succession of envoys to engage with Hamas but lacks the bravery to talk to the Islamist movement openly, its leader, Khaled Meshal, said in an interview with the Guardian. Meshal praised President Dmitry Medvedev of Russia for meeting him in Damascus and the Syrian president, Bashar al-Assad, for hosting the discussion 10 days ago. He told Medvedev that the US was also talking to him. "I thanked him for that meeting and told...
