I still like the idea of case less ammo.

Has anyone but H&K developed any, and if so in a caliber larger than 5.56mm?

Me too. Or combustable case ammunition (used in the 120mm gun of the M1 tank).

The XM-8 Assault Rifle, by H&K.

I posted a thread tracking its development about two years ago. Search FR for "XM-8 : New US service rifle?" to find it. I've also got it bookmarked on my homepage links.

It's a pretty awesome rifle.

I don't know how effective it is against a man, but I've seen what a .270 does to a big mule deer, and it isn't pretty. Drops it like a hot rock.

Seen a couple of elk taken with 'em as well.

Shoots flat, absolutley screams downrange, and hits plenty hard.

But it has no bayonet lug or stacking swivel, the Army won't buy it.

Looks like a necked down 7.62 x 39 to me.

That's the prototype. HK has the more updated model on its homepage linked above.

Plus, here's the thread on it. Lots of gun porn, too.

The final version will have standby iron sights, the closed flash supressor, and a bayonet lug (hidden in the photo).

Check the thread linked above. It does have a lug; you just can't see it in the photos due to the stock.

Nice round...I'm glad that the brass finally had a wake up call to the .223 fiasco.

That rifle is scary. Imagine an infantry position being over run and having to go hand to hand with that Tupperware gun.
