CAIRO, Egypt - Excavators discovered 20 gilded mummies in the Bahariya oasis in western Egypt, the government's council of antiquities said Tuesday.

The find brings the total number of gilded mummies recovered in the 2,000-year-old cemetery to 234. The site, known as the Valley of the Golden Mummies, was discovered in 1996.

Zahi Hawass, head of antiquities council, said excavators also discovered the tomb of Badiherkhib, the grandson of former Bahariya Gov. Jed-Khunsu. Jed-Khunsu's tomb already has been found.

Fifty bronze coins were found with the mummies, the statement said. Survivors were believed to leave the money for the deceased to pay for the trip to the afterlife.

Wow that is a find! How wonderful to discover they are still intact. I am sure they will learn a lot from these new specimens. I wonder what dynastic period they date from. Maybe some here who know more about Egyptology can give an estimate of what classification a 2000 year old mummy would fall under.

"The mummies found so far in Bahariya are already revealing a great deal of information about the lives of the citizens of the oasis during the Roman Period,"

If I'm not mistaken I've been watching them discover these things live on the Discovery Channel at 8:00PM for the last 3 nights. It's Egypt week and quite interesting stuff if not a little corny done on live TV.

By "corny," are you saying that Geraldo was there?

LOL, Geraldo is getting a reputation similar to "where's Waldo?" or that goofy gag with the photoshopped foreign tourist showing up everywhere since the beginning of time, beginning right after 9/11.
