WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump had a new target on Sunday, calling fellow White House contender Ted Cruz "a little bit of a maniac" as the U.S. senator surpassed him in an Iowa poll.Cruz's dogged pursuit of conservative Iowa voters has paid off in the form of a 10-point lead over Trump in the state, which has one of the earliest presidential contests.
Unlike the other Republicans in the 2016 White House race, the U.S. senator from Texas has embraced Trump and avoided public criticism of the popular candidate.
But last week he questioned Trump's judgment at a private fundraiser, according to the New York Times, after the billionaire businessman advocated temporarily banning Muslims from entering the United States.
That got Trump's attention.
"I don’t think he is qualified to be president," Trump said on "Fox News Sunday."(continued)

I can’t prove it, but my gut is telling me that there’s actually a quiet understanding between them. Right now they’re both still running for President. They have to take *some* shots at each other. I still wouldn’t be surprised to see a Trump/Cruz ticket.

I agree with you. This has some element of Kabuki to it.
I can't prove it, but my gut is telling me that the internet "buzz" about a "Trump/Cruz" ticket exists only in the minds of Trump supporters. Right now they're both still running for President. Trump supporters want/need Cruz to drop out and endorse Trump since a credible proven conservative still in the race poses a threat to GOP voters pulling the lever for Trump in the primary. Unfortunately for them, neither Cruz nor their savior Trump show any interest in running together as a "team".
