The NRA is now openly floating, or at least allowing to be floated, its endorsement of Harry Reid, a man who voted for the Brady Gun Bill. In a New York Times puff piece on the NRA that largely gives the NRA credit for things it tried to undermine (more on that later), there is this:
A point of contention on both the left and the right is the N.R.A.s close working relationship with Mr. Reid, the Senate leader who helped get a number of pro-gun rights measures included in broader bills.
That relationship has led some gun rights supporters to lobby against the idea that the N.R.A. might endorse Mr. Reid in his tough re-election campaign this November in Nevada.
The N.R.A. is not tamping down speculation.
The NRAs lobbyist, Chris Cox, claims that Chuck Schumer would be Majority Leader were Harry Reid gone (note the NRAs implicit expectation of a Democratic Senate majority). But heres the thing Chuck Schumer could not get anti-gun legislation through the Senate and whats more, Schumer, when head of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, recognized the damage to the Democrats being anti-gun was having. Many of the Democrats in the Senate the NRA loves were people supported by Chuck Schumer.
So they have gone from denying they would endorse Harry Reid to not tamping down speculation.

Midgets are cool.
My caller ID said I got a call from the NRA yesterday. I’m glad I didn’t answer it.
Another reason I chose not to join in the first place.
And I’m glad I didn’t go with a lifetime membership.
Floaters.
I just called and cancelled my membership as well as telling them to remove all contact information from their records.
When asked my reason for cancelling, I cited their support for Reid. period. End of story.
I feel like I just woke up in the Twilight zone. What in God’s name is happening. When in doubt, follow the money.
I’m looking forward to the caller ID coming up with their name...can’t wait to explain to them why they will never see another dime from me :)
Doesn’t he support anti-gun judges and help elect other anti-gun politicians and government funding of anti-gun groups of all kinds? NEA and Planned Unparenthood come to mind.
The NRA is THAT shallow are they?
As a Life Member I'm sorry to see it. The current Board needs to be tossed, IMHO, and told why.
Charlton Heston is rolling in his grave.
Good idea. I’ll follow your example.
This month’s cover story of the NRA magazine was about the Arizona rancher who was murdered on his ranch. I’d look at it for more facts but it went out with the trash.
The article is full of references to bad politicians, and while reading it I wondered if the author was on the same page as the org. I guess it was an attempt at damage control.
Off to cancel my membership - what is the other pro-gun group? American... something?
Your last point is the key- I wonder how many “dues Paying” NRA members that have vowed to walk actually thought about writing an email or a letter to the NRA? Probably only a few.
They complain about policies there organization makes, walk out and “help” the left w/o them doing squat... With firends like these, we do not need enemies.
Stay with the program, flex some grass roots muscle, write a note, be counted. Duh.
No organization is w/o flaw, and the NRA has its share I know.
Best;
The NRA is THAT shallow are they?
That is the real flaw IMO in the NRA method of endorsements. 99.99999% of dems support anti-2nd amendment judges. The NRA needs to weight their criteria differently and take that into account. They also never withdraw the endorsement of an allegedly pro-gun incumbent over a challenger, even if the challenger is more pro-gun. I am not renewing my NRA membership.
I got a call from the NRA a week ago.
I told the man that the reason I wouldn’t donate anything was the Reid endorsement, and the fact that LaPierre was making a deal to hurt our First Amendment Rights.
He didn’t seem to know about either one of these subjects.
Gun Owners of America is the one that I’m looking at joining.
I recommend contacting the NRA to let the leadership know your position on their Senate endorsements this year.
What the NRA has written so far on this issue certainly leads one to think that they are considering such an endorsement (NRA-PVF ENDORSEMENTS NOT YET ANNOUNCED IN ANY U.S. SENATE RACE FOR NOVEMBER GENERAL ELECTION):
All of which leads to a very serious question for all NRA members and gun owners who oppose Sen. Reid to contemplate: who would take Reids place if he loses his raceand his critically important position as Senate Majority Leader? Remember, the Senate Majority Leader is the gatekeeper who decides which legislation will be considered on the Senate floor. If Sen. Reid loses, the next candidate for Majority Leader is very likely to be Chuck Schumer or Dick Durbintwo of the most anti-gun U.S. Senators in history! It is critical to the defense of the Second Amendment that we have pro-gun majorities in the U.S. Congress. While no endorsement has yet been issued in this race, nor any other U.S. Senate race for the November general election, rest assured that we will make all of these announcements at the appropriate time and in light of our election policy.
I’m waiting to see what they do.
The NRA selling out conservatives faster then Palin did with her McCain support.
