In his inaugural address to Congress President Washington said,
It would be peculiarly improper to omit, in this first official act, my fervent supplication to that Almighty Being, who rules over the universe, who presides in the councils of nations, and whose providential aids can supply every human defect, that His benediction may consecrate to the liberties and happiness of the people of the United States
No people can be bound to acknowledge and adore the invisible hand which conducts the affairs of men more than the people of the United States. Every step by which they have advanced to the character of an independent nation seems to have been distinguished by some token of providential agency
We ought to be no less persuaded that the propitious smiles of Heaven can never be expected on a nation that disregards the eternal rules of order and right, which Heaven itself has ordained.

God’s hand was definitely present in the forming of this country, although I wonder if he’s done with us now.
It is gone... we have turned from God. He did not turn his back on us.
WE have allowed un-Godly things to become the law of the land.
WE have taken on feet of clay and violated Godly principles. We have stood for and allowed everything in our midst... anything goes... freedom perverted without accountability or consequence.

He may not be one with us yet. We certainly are deserving of judgement. We have seen some judgements on our nation but we have yet to see the absolute judgement that God brings on nations.
I have different ideas why that may be. One thing we may be close enough to the end that God is withholding His judgement until then. He may be withholding judgement because He still has plans for us.
I offer up 2 chronicles 7:19-22. So many want to claim 2 chronicles 7:14 without reading the full text of God’s promise to His people.

I have read all of Diana Gabaldon’s “Outlander” series, which (to greatly simplify and paraphrase) is a historical fiction that follows a Scottish Jacobite family from pre-Culloden in 1743 to their escape to North Carolina and their participation in the Revolutionary War. One of my favorite scenes of the whole series is the fog rolling in and the army escaping Long Island. The author really captured the supernatural quality of that extraordinary “Hand of God” event.
That’s fantastic you have been able to find all that information. I have been able to find my ancestor’s name on a pay certificate and muster roll late in the war (1781), but have no idea what he did, or if that name is even him, as both he and his wife died before pensions were made available.

Oh yes, I am very deeply entrenched in the family history stuff. We have one Patriot in the DAR registry, but I would really like to link to this particular one (who is not in the registry), since he carries my paternal surname. He’s been very tricky to locate, however. The proverbial “brick wall.” If you ever have some time to go over to family search.org (free) and browse through the Rev War pension applications, I highly recommend it. Each applicant had to give his own history to the court scribe, who wrote everything down. Some of the things those men saw were just jaw-dropping. The testimonials were taken when these were very old men. I found the testimonial of a distant cousin who ran away from home and joined when he was only 13. I think he witnessed every battle in the southern theater, plus he was at the surrender in Yorktown. Sometimes you have to wonder how much the truth was stretched, but fascinating to read nonetheless.
I hope they find the remains of the men who served.
I was raised on Long Island.
When I was a kid, I heard the story of a farmer who was plowing his field on Long Island. One day, he plowed up an old cannon ball.
The cannon ball was believed to have been lobbed onto Long Island by a British warship on Long Island Sound during the Revolutionary War.
George was right on target with that comment, Heaven has smiled on the US throughout it's history because prior to today's generation the people and their government honored God and enacted laws based on His written Word. But those days are gone forever, and God has now been declared by most self-defined "intellectuals" to be just an imaginary being invented by primitive humanoids to explain the natural processes of nature.
How can we or any other nation believe for one moment that God will ignore our nation's disregard for his rules of proper conduct for government and individuals? There's no secret as to why the US is in the process of becoming a 2nd rate nation in almost every category except military power, and even supremacy in that category is at serious risk if we are forced to continue financing our armed forces with money borrowed from potential enemies.
Truth is, despite the pompous pronouncements of our intellectual community, God really does exist and His rules of conduct still apply to America as a nation and to Americans as individuals. Furthermore, He doesn't break or even bend His rules in order to accommodate our contradictory desires, and IMHO that means we as a nation and as individuals are way overdue for a correction of our libertine lifestyles and disbelief in the reality of the One who condemns those lifestyles.
(BTW, I looked up "contradictory" in my handy-dandy Webster's, and yes it is a real word and I actually spelled it right 1st time around the block!)
Wow! You’re probably one of only a few Americans alive today that are aware of an ancestor killed in that battle. Only a few hundred Americans were actually killed in the battle on the Island. (More would die as prisoners in the brutal prison ships.)
Yes. It’s very interesting that the British attepmted a similar escape as did the Americans, but failed.
Interesting. I’ll have to check that out. If she captured the event as you describe, I would be very interested. Thanks!
He may be waiting for us to wrestle with Him so that He brings about revival. Only the power of the Holy Spirit can bring that about, not great marketing, not terrorism. Thing is, child sacrifice is not forgiven. It is delayable only with repentance. It will be 40 years for Israel in 2016 and it is illegal in only 6 nations.
