A Baptist church in California has voted to welcome the gay community despite going against the Southern Baptist Convention's views on homosexuality.
The New Heart Community Church in La Mirada, CA faced a difficult decision in early 2014 when lead pastor Danny Cortez told the congregation that his son, Drew, had come out -- and that he himself no longer agreed with the church's teachings on homosexuality.

The operative word here is “California” I suspect.
Must not be much of a church then. If they hated gays before and now don’t, they don’t know Christian teachings on love. If they now accept the gay lifestyle, they dont’ know Christian teachings on homosexuality.
Never fails! One gay shows up in a family or a community and everyone has to swing around to accommodate the little person.
You nailed it.
I call a certain nuance of BS here.
As regards welcoming the gay community, I think that they always welcomed everyone to their church. The issue is recognition and acceptance of homosexual marriage. Gay behavior is considered sinful, but, under the concept of hate the sin and love the sinner, the gay community was always welcomed.
I’m not Southern Baptist, so someone correct me if I’m wrong. My understanding is that all who seek a relationship with the Lord and to be with the body of Christ will not be turned away. But having said that, such persons are asked to turn away from sin.
Sodomy is one of the big sins. It is over and over again in the bible in both new and old testaments. If you stand for nothing, you will accept anything.
All I can say is “Wow”.
I read the pastor’s reasoning and it is tripe.
God is a God of love but HE is also a God of judgment.
You can love the sinner, but you cannot love the sin.
As a pastor, he has abdicated his responsibility to teach the whole word of God, not just the sunny parts.
His stance will lead many astray.
"Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.
Yay, lets base theological decisions on the proclivities of our family members!
Southern Baptists will be heading for Baltimore in just a few days, and the annual meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention is to be held in a city that has not hosted the convention since 1940. This time, Baptists attending the meeting will face an issue that would not have been imaginable just a few years ago, much less in 1940 a congregation that affirms same-sex relationships.
Since homosexuality is a CHOICE, I guess that Baptist minister is OKAY with folks CHOOSING homosexuality.
They have a very shallow faith
hated gays?
I doubt they ever hated gays; they might hate the sin but not the sinner. Now they have embraced the sins.
Then change the sign on the building to “Unitarian” and call it a day.
Then resign.
The Southern Baptist Convention should kick them out.
That’s the way - Instead of sticking to his beliefs he changes them to suit the problems his son faces therefore ensuring that his son, himself and maybe even his congregation will fall for the delusion. Nice way to condemn your son Pastor!
What if the pastor’s son declared that he likes screwing children? Would the church get squishy and change their views on that?
