A Catholic chaplain at MedStar Washington Hospital Center stopped delivering a 63-year-old heart attack patient Communion prayers and last rites after the man said he was gay, the patient said Wednesday, describing a dramatic bedside scene starting with him citing Pope Francis and ending with him swearing at the cleric.
Details of the exchange earlier this month between the Rev. Brian Coelho and retired travel agent Ronald Plishka couldn’t be confirmed with the priest, who did not respond to a direct e-mail or to requests left with the hospital and the archdiocese. The archdiocese of Washington, for whom he works, declined to comment and said Coelho “is not doing interviews.” The bedside discussion was first reported Monday in the Washington Blade.

If he is unrepentant, the priest is under no obligation, as far as I’m aware.
Also, if the man did not feel his sexual acts were sinful.... WHY DID HE MENTION THEM?!
Sounds like this guy was trying to cause a controversy, so its just another rerun of the same boring story. Nothing to see here.

If I want to belong to an organization, I keep their rules. A man admitting to sexual perversion is not keeping the rules of the Catholic Church, but he still wants to partake in all the perks. I’m sorry but I agree with the priest. I think more priests should have the intestinal fortitude that this man has.
Well, he was sure the church was wrong about one thing. Why not gamble on needing last rites too.
1. The Catholic Church requires that a full confession of known mortal sins is needed before the reception of Holy Communion. Persisting in sexual acts outside of sacramental marriage is a mortal sin. The ill person MUST have declared that he was not planning to change his behavior or that he was not repentant of past behavior.
2. “Someone walked in” when the sacrament of The Anointing of the Sick was going on. Did that 3rd party stay in the room? Absolute and complete privacy is a requirement for confession. The priest did the right thing by leaving the room if he determined that privacy could not be guaranteed.
Agreed. IIRC, last rites include praying a “perfect” act of contrition - if he is not contrite, last rites are pointless.

I’ve got one question that is rather important on the scale of things. Last (LAST) Rites.....did this homosexual die? Did he recover?
Seems to me if he ain’t dead, he’s got some time to shop around for a New Age Priest of Anything Goes and get his last rites.
As a new Catholic it is my understanding that Last Rites is final forgiveness of sin. If the man was not willing to admit his sexual preference was a sin, then naturally the Priest would be forced to act in accordance with Church law.
I am not Catholic, But I totally agree with the priest.
An Unrepentant Sinner is not entitled to a Sacrament that includes repenting of sin.
The Catholic Church says Homosexuality is a sin, and needs to be confessed as such in order to receive Communion.
If this guy did not deem it a sin, he wouldn’t have brought it up and just would have quietly taken Communion.
It would seem that he was “Double-Dog-Daring” the Priest to refuse him.
And he is still alive, so he probably didn’t need the Last Rites anyway.
I am so sick of these “In-Your-Face” set-ups and attacks against people of faith.
How about when the individual flaunts his “sexuality.”
A desire to engage in sodomy (with a same-sex or opposite-sex partner) is a temptation to sin, which should be resisted.
Actually doing the deed is the sin, which must be repented before a person can receive absolution and Communion.
The sin is homosexuality. It’s apparent the complainer has refused to change his homosexual ways, which is part of making a good confession.
I’m not a Catholic and have no ax to grind, but when you are in an organization you play by their rules or leave it. No grounds for complaint. The press doesn’t get to set Catholic doctrine.
If there ever was a case doomed to failure this would be it.
They guys alive and complaining about poor service. Tell him God gave him one more chance to straighten out.
This is one of those stories where I’m suspicious that it did, in fact, happen but wouldn’t be overly surprised to find it was true.
