Heres a snippet from Glenn Becks radio show 5/27/10 this one clip should eternally disqualify Glenn Beck as a commentator on religion in the eyes of all informed listeners:
Here is a transcript provided by RazorKiss that starts at about 38 seconds into the clip (link):
Glenn: the Dead Sea Scrolls, you know what they are? Stu, do you know what the Dead Sea Scrolls are? Stu: Well, of course I do Glenn: Now, cmon, most people dont. Stu: Well, I heard of them, I dont really know Glenn: You dont really know. You have no idea why they were there. Sara average person doesnt know. Any idea, take a guess on why the Dead Sea Scrolls were there, or anything else. Sara(?): Something religious. Glenn: Okay, good. Even though Ive explained this on this program a couple of times, Im glad to see that even the people that work with me dont even listen. So heres what happened. When Constantine decided that he was going to cobble together an army, he did the Council of Nicea, right, Pat? Pat: Yea. Glenn: The Council of Nicea, and what they did is brought all of the religious figures together, all the Christians and then they said, Ok, lets put together the Apostles Creed, lets you know, you guys do it. So they brought all their religious scripture together, thats when the Bible was first bound and everything else. And then they said, Anybody that disagrees with this is a heretic and off with their head! Well, thats what the Dead Sea Scrolls are. The Dead Sea Scrolls are those scriptures that people had at the time that they said, They are destroying all of this truth. Whether its truth or not is up to the individual, but at that time those people thought that this was something that needed to be preserved and so they rolled up the scrolls and put them in clay pots and they put them in the back of caves where no one could find them. They were hidden scripture because everything was being destroyed that disagreed with the Council of Nicea and Constantine. Thats what those things are.
Schleitheim has done a hilarious analysis here. Glenn Beck is simply too stupid for words. It is little wonder that Liberty University thought he was a worthy choice to speak at their commencement ceremony.
The Mormons have significant documentation issues across the board. It’s not surprising that he would try to paint Christendom with the same brush.
Oh, haha..I happened to catch that show and now I see his mistake, it wasn’t the “Dead Sea Scrolls” it was the Nag Hamadi writings including Plutarch...
Beck mixed up Nag Hamadi with Qumran, though his concept, that religious people hid their dearly held writings in the face of an enemy that would destroy them, the scrolls were deposited in the caves to prevent there destruction.
In general, I like Glenn Beck....but his explanation of the Dead Sea Scrolls is beyond ridiculous and is not academically supported.
So can someone tell us what IS the correct origin and history of these Dead Sea Scrolls?
Beck should stick to what he knows and leave religious history alone. “A man’s gotta know his limitations”.
I wasn’t familiar with Nag Hammadi. That history actually gives GB a little cover.
It’s common knowledge:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_sea_scrolls
“common knowledge” is an oxymoron, like common sense.
Yeah, too stupid for words.
Beck confused some ancient texts, most of which people are clueless about. So that sure makes him stupid.
This article and the commentary proves that the war against Beck is now a Holy War of the Jihad stripe.
Why?
Because Beck is trying to warn people about how many of the mainstay churches and synagogues were taken over by Socialists.
The theological seminaries were infiltrated by Marxists/Statists at about the same time that they infiltrated academe. It originated in Germany, spread to the major European universities and then to the American universities.
When they infiltrated the theological seminaries, they replaced the Christian message of individual salvation that changes a person to perform good works to one of collective salvation that arises only through good works (good works as defined by Socialists, redistributing not only wealth but earnings, not “judging” even behavior that is an abomination to God, suicidal pacifism, etc.).
Beck is demonstrating regularly now how most churches are nothing more than arms of Socialism hidden with feel-good terms like “economic justice” and “social justice.”
So it is natural that churches and “religious” people who are Socialists first would want to destroy Beck. Their view of God’s kingdom is that of a totalitarian State. And Statism is their true religion.
Thus, they are fighting a Holy War with someone who is simply warning people of the wolves in sheep’s clothing WHILE HE IS ALSO ADVISING THEM TO TURN TO GOD TO PREPARE FOR THE DARK TIMES AHEAD.
Incidentally, I listen to Beck daily. I never heard him refer to Socialist Christians as “stupid” or as “morons” just misguided or misguiding based upon their Statist message.
The Dead Sea Scrolls were portions of the Old Testament written down by a Jewish sect called the Essenes (Sp?) in the first century AD, probably during the time of Masada, or the Roman destruction of the Jewish Temple at Jerusalem...
They were found hidden in a cave in the late 1940’s.
They contained the book of Isaiah, the Psalms, and I can't recall what other books of the Bible...
They are vastly important because they confirm our modern translations of the Bible down to a single word.
Meaning, there were no mistakes made in our modern translations of these books! Especially when one considers how much of the New Testament story is contained in Isaiah and the Psalms, the Dead Sea Scrolls take on an even more important place in history. (Isaiah 53 is a prophecy about the birth of Christ, Psalms is filled with messianic prophecies fulfilled in the coming of Jesus...)
Since the Bible was always a hand copied text until the advent of the printing press in the 11 century, the evidence that the Bible we have is reliable, (at least those books of the OT that were in the Dead Sea Scrolls) the discovery of the Scrolls is a wonderful find for Jews and Christians alike.
I could be remembering some of the above incorrectly, but this is I believe a good overview.
Glenn’s “jump the shark” moment? His credibility is on the wane.
I visited Qumran in 2000, so perhaps my knowledge of the subject is a little more “common” that the average bear.
Well instead of posturing on some holy alter, and calling him “stupid”, like some 10 year old, just write him and tell him where he is in error, and he will gladly correct himself on his next show.
Like somehow THIS is something 99.9999% of people would honestly give a riff about someone getting wrong.
It’s not like Christ will give you an extra gold star for being so pompous about it.
Actually, the Dead Sea Scrolls are what each of the 57 states created at their inception, then hid from the illegal immigrant invaders.
“Glenns jump the shark moment? His credibility is on the wane.”
Yeah because he has been so wrong on things lately.
/sarcasm
I wouldn’t go that far. Rush has had a few factual errors and more than a few embarrassing malapropisms and has survived just fine. I just thought it was not a good moment for the show.
Credibility? Did you see Friday’s show on the black founders?
He threw so many facts at me I couldn’t keep up, all backed by good scholars and research; I wish I’d Tivo’d it.
If this is what Beck said, then Beck is woefully ignorant of the history of the Dead Sea Scrolls.
That does not make him ignorant in other areas.
I did not accuse him of being generally ignorant. I repeat, I am a huge fan. I chose this source, partially, to show what anti Beck people are thinking.
HA HA yea! Glenn it TOO SToooPID FOR WORDS... hee hee hee.. that’s it for him then, huh?
duhhhhh he made a questionalble mistake about some ancient manuscripts in the context of a description of why they would be hidden in a cave (to prevent destruction) and THAT’S IT HE’S DONE FOR - every thing he has ever said and done is now in question!
- Beck is doing more for this country than many people combined (including YOU if this is your contribution)
Gee, I’m really among the grownups this morning. Has your knee stopped jerking long enough to understand the context in which I posted this story?
I think you pretty well nailed it and yes, those scrolls do confirm that our Bible translations, especially the King James, was right on the money.
That was a great, and very informative show.
I’d never looked at the 3/5th compromise in that light.
Glenn Beck is incredibly informative, however I can only take him in small doses, like nitro pills, I grasp the essence he hammers on daily, so the near daily slide into “the country is finished!” just becomes grating when repeated ad nauseum.
For me at least.
Good detective work Marlowe! Soros is financing an intensive, microscopic investigation of Reagan, Beck, and anyone else that could be a threat.
His point is valid...these were scrolls that were perseved becayse people BELIEVED them to be true....where is the problem.
The difference between Rush and Glenn is that. Rush doesn’t pretend to be a religious zealot. It really bothers me when someone that belongs to a cult starts mixing religion and politics. And, yes I can just turn Beck off and often do just that.
Constantine had an army long before the Council of Nicaea (which took place after he conquered the eastern half of the empire from Licinius). The Council of Nicaea has nothing to do with the Apostles' Creed. Even the so-called Nicene Creed is not actually the creed adopted in 325 but dates to the second ecumenical council in 381 (the two creeds are similar but some of the A.D. 325 wording is absent from the Nicene Creed still read in churches).
I heard this the day he said it and actually commented on the Glenn Beck radio thread on FR. I thought the Nicea stuff sounded wonky and googled around. The Nicene council wasn’t when scripture was defined, that’s Dan Brown stuff. And I guess he confused the Nicene creed with the Apostles’ creed.
Flapp Jackson in the Morning this Morning’s strongest subject isn’t Church history, shocking. The point about teaching kids is good, maybe he’ll get another analogy next time.
Glenn is a radio DJ, I am a big fan too. I think his radio show has suffered with the start of the TV shows. But I think the TV show is good for conservatism.
Freegards
Even if he meant to say “Nag Hammadi,” his portrait of Constantine, the Council of Nicea etc. is goofball stupid. Of course, it’s the sort of goofball stupidness that a lot of Christian-despising pro-Gnostic, champions of Gnostic Nag Hammadi against the eeeeeeeeeeeeevvvvvvvvvviiiiiiiiiiillllll mainstream Nicene Church of the day like to spout.
So Glenn B. in this instance grabbed a bunch of liberal pro-Gnostic Christian-despising academic distortion of history and misapplied it to the Dead Sea Scrolls.
Even if he had applied it to the Nag Hammadi Gnostic writings, it would be a case of Glenn Beck’s suspicion of historic mainstream Christianity leading him to let down his guard and accept nonsense because it accords with his “anti-Constantinianism.”
But a lot of low-church, anti-Catholic, Protestant share the same “boogeyman Constantine” bias and are susceptible to the same mistake.
So, okay, he mistook Nag Hammadi for Dead Sea Scrolls. But even if we cut him slack for that, he’s unwittingly buying into liberal crap.
Glenn Beck is incorrect in his facts.shalom b'SHEM Yah'shua HaMashiachBut Richard Amiel McGough is no follower of Yah'shua the Messiah.
Well thought out comments. Thank you.
Not to quibble here, but Gutenberg was 15th century. The 11th was still the dreaded Middle Ages. The printing press might have been invented in China at that point, but not in the west.
I always forget the dates. When exactly was the Gutenberg press invented?
I'd have to look it up to be sure, but somewhere around 1450 A.D. (Wikipedia says 1439) By the end of the 15th century, most books were printed on a press, not copied manuscripts. And yes, the first book Gutenberg printed was a bible, in actuality The Vulgate.
I agree with your solution. Just turn Beck off. The problem we have today is whenever someone doesn't like certain speech, they want to make a law and control what is broadcast over the air.
Thank you, TLG!
The Dead Sea Scrolls contain parts of every book of the Old Testament except for the book of Esther. They also contain other texts from ancient Hebrew life. They are not limited to the Scriptures.
There is a considerable academic debate as to who actually wrote them. However, the accuracy of translation of these texts establishes Holy Scripture as reliable.
Glenn:
the Dead Sea Scrolls, you know what they are? Stu, do you know what the Dead Sea Scrolls are? Stu: Well, of course I do
Glenn: Now, cmon, most people dont

Some egos have an ignorant imagination...
I was at Qumran in 1988...
I also saw the Dead Sea scrolls on display in Jerusalem...
They had them spread out around a large circular display structure and under glass...
As I recall parts were identified as the Book of Isaiah...
I agree with your solution. Just click out of this thread. The problem we have today is whenever someone doesn't like certain speech, they want to make a law and control what is posted online. (Like controlling comments by Coldwater Creek)
Oh, did I say that? Actually, not my thoughts at all. But I thought it'd be fun quoting your own philosophical standard -- applied to you. (Poster, heal thyself)
Upon first glance, I didn't see CC making any "ban Beck" comments, did you?
And if you're talking about the thread poster's (CalvaryJohn's) initial comment, he talked about qualifications on certain subjects...and how some people disqualify themselves...which is distinct from having somebody else come and disqualify you from speaking on certain subjects.
He's saying Beck has disqualified himself as being any reliable authority on certain subjects -- like religion. (Too bad Liberty University flunked in taking this counsel)
But, my initial point to you sticks: If you don't like either what CalvaryJohn or Coldwater Creek said, then listen to your own lecture: Just click out of this thread vs. trying to "control" certain assessments posters have of Beck.
And if you don't think you're trying to "control" anybody's thoughts on this thread, fine. Maybe you aren't. But then don't introduce the topic that you think others are, then. Play by the same standard you're applying to others.
Amen.
(I even like your flame-resistant subtlety on that first part in tremendously understating it!)
Well, this is probably as bad as a radio commentator can screw up something.
This is terribly embarrassing for anybody who even pretends to be "religious."
But it also shows Beck's Mormon bias toward Constantine, who Mormon leaders have been thrashing for his role in putting together the Council that elaborated the Nicene Creed.
What a lot of people don't realize is how strongly Mormons attack the Christian creeds, even enshring these attacks as Mormon "scripture" -- like the following:
Lds founder Joseph Smith claimed he was trying to figure out "which of all the sects was right...which I should join. I was answered that I must join none of them, for they were all wrong; and the Personage who addressed me said that ALL their CREEDS were an ABOMINATION in his sight; that those professors were ALL corrupt..." (Joseph Smith - History vv. 18-19, Pearl of Great Price)
So Beck is just confirming his Mormon beliefs -- that ALL creeds of Protestants, Catholic and Orthodox are putrid to his god(s).
Thank you Colofornian.
You apparently still know what it is to FReep. People have different points of view. I come here to express and debate, not to shut people down or to just read my own point of view.
I’ve had my mind changed a good number of times right here.
I made it clear I wasn’t trashing the totality of his work, twice. Yet too many posters react without a closer look at the thing.
Never addressed that. I listen to Becks Radio program everyday and enjoy it. My point to Coldwater was if people don't like his show, then don't listen.
But, my initial point to you sticks: If you don't like either what CalvaryJohn or Coldwater Creek said, then listen to your own lecture: Just click out of this thread vs. trying to "control" certain assessments posters have of Beck.
My statement to Coldwater was congruent with her comment.
OK, but Nag Hammadi was the source of a lot of gnostic heresies, like the Gospel of Thomas. I love the guy, but he sure doesn’t know religious history. Even if he mixed up the two, he was basically saying those heretical writings were the truth!
I do think Mormonism has a lot to do with this shortcoming.
You: Never addressed that.
Ya wanna explain then what your then cryptic meaning you apply to these words? "...they want to make a law and control what is broadcast over the air."???
You did mean at least "ban" some of what Beck says, right?
There was nothing cryptic in my statement unless your paranoid.
You did mean at least "ban" some of what Beck says, right?
Reiterating what I posted to you before:
I listen to Becks Radio program everyday and enjoy it. My point to Coldwater was if people don't like his show, then don't listen.
I think that both of us was saying that Glenn can and should say anything that he wants, but we are free to turn him off if we don’t like what is being said.
