Former Navy SEAL Daniel W. Swift was killed in Ukraine on Wednesday, a Navy official told NBC News Friday.
Swift had been in active deserter status since March 11, 2019, the Navy Absentee Collection and Information Center said.

“Adam Thiemann — a former U.S. Army Ranger who previously fought in Ukraine with Swift and stayed in contact with his platoon through phone calls and late-night text messages — told Rolling Stone that during an operation in Bakhmut on the night of Jan. 14 and into the early morning of Jan. 15, Russian forces launched an anti-personnel rocket-propelled grenade at Swift and two other soldiers, knocking them down.
An American intelligence official, who first told Rolling Stone about Swift’s death, said he suffered a massive traumatic brain injury and died early Thursday morning. The official asked not to be named because they were not authorized to speak publicly.
Thiemann wrote on Facebook that Ukrainian troops were doing everything they could to keep Swift alive, but their resources are stretched thin as they attempt to accommodate all of the wounded.
Swift was left in critical condition with severe head trauma, per Thiemann, who was not on the operation at the time but briefed by his platoon mates. The other two soldiers are stable and in recovery. “

As always, should any member of your team be caught or killed, the Secretary will disavow all knowledge of your actions.
I respect a man who ..
...deserts ?
We will remember that.
.He ceased being a seal when he deserted imho.
No problem, your thread has a different Source (NBC News), and different writers and text content.
Both qualify for an individual thread.
Carry on.
So that’s what they’re calling “advisers” these days.
Ping
“”He ceased being a seal when he deserted imho.””
The Navy pulled his Trident when he deserted.
Bowe Bergdahl deserted his post and then he got captured.
So even though he was a deserter, he was still an American and a rescue effort was undertaken where at least six soldiers from his battalion were killed during the search. Definitely newsworthy.
Come to think of it, it's probably unusual that someone as highly-trained as a SEAL would go AWOL (in the Navy, the term is UA or Unauthorized Absence). However, the Special Operations community (in all branches) has had a share of bad press lately. There's some serious dysfunction going on that many are attributing to peacetime boredom.
FWIW, the people I've seen who have skipped out have all been low-ranking deck swabs. Nobody went looking for them.
Deserter my ass.
He was on a joint mission Ukraine mission for Uncle Sam.
Does any think the Pentagon will say: “yeah, we sent him there. is that a problem?”
I’d be shocked if we had any experienced teams who haven’t been fighting in Ukraine.
Who deserts from the SEALs?
CIA undercover
Fu-ked around and found out.
More likely that was just a cover story in order to deny any knowledge of him being in the Ukraine....
When I was growing up, there was a family in the neighborhood whose son had gone AWOL during Vietnam. I never saw the guy but was somewhat friendly with his sisters. Anyway, they DID come looking for him - on more than one occasion.
Where did you read that or are you just surmising?
Ukraine has the support of America and the rest of our alliance, so you support Russia so much that you like it when your side kills an American?
Where did I read it?
