“civil forfeiture,” the bastard progeny of the War on Drugs.

"They said they smelled marijuana on the money," Vera Ward says. "We don't smoke. It's not plausible since my sister and I aren't around it."
I cannot stand marijuana, I find its smell nauseating. But it is legal here in Arizona and half the rest of the country. Money circulates all over the country, too. Lame excuse by the cops.

A violation of the 4th, 5th, 8th, and 14th Amendments. Hopefully, our conservative Supreme Court will ban civil forfeiture.

No use complaining. Dems are in control and are not going to stop stealing citizens’ money.
Anyone who voted dem is responsible for this.

This is how local police departments all along I-40 make their budget and bonus and as much else as they can cover.
Who knows how much money they confiscate and how much of it actually gets reported?
Terrifying.

The sisters had my sympathy before it was mentioned that they were breeding American Bullies. The last thing that anybody needs is more of these dogs. The sisters might not be involved in the drug trade but I’ll bet a lot of their customers are.

I read somewhere that a huge share of circulating currency has been exposed to some drug or other. Certainly not proof these ladies did anything wrong.

The bigger REAL issue is paying cash for a service or product; possibly to avoid paying taxes on the income. They could have written a check for $17,000, or done a wire transfer.

“they tried to send $17,500 in cash through FedEx”
There’s a reason we invented money orders and cashier’s checks people.
Not to say that we don’t need to reform the asset forfeiture laws, but still, even if the cops didn’t take the money it’s still extremely stupid to send 17 grand in cash via the mail.

... tried to send $17,500 in cash through FedEx... Ex-squeeze me? Does this seem really stupid to anyone else?

They were stupid to send cash through the mail. But being stupid is not a crime. I hope they get their money back.
