There’s so much in this article I didn’t know about Columbus and was never taught in school. His voyages were the direct result of the muslim takeover of Constantinople and trade routes. This professor (link to lecture here) spent a great deal of time researching Columbus and his voyages. Her articles and lectures are an eye-opener. Politically, she does not come across as right-leaning and sounds more left-leaning, but she concludes that Columbus was not the evil man modern-day society believes him to be. In the time of Columbus, Christians believed the Apocalypse was imminent. In preparation, they wanted to save as many souls as possible and put Jerusalem back into the hands of Christians. This was the purpose of Columbus's voyages.

Yes they refer to us as colonizers. How for instance would a friend of mine who came here as a child from Germany in the 50s be held accountable for what happened to the natives in 1850s? Columbus also made big goof-ups, such as identifying the wrong star as Polaris for, oh, a thousand nautical miles or so underway.
