Many years ago I read a story about a French fur trapper who worked the Great Lakes around the time of the American Revolution. Well, one day he went to visit his friends at Tribe A and couldn’t find them anywhere. So he canoed down to his friends at Tribe B.

“Where is Tribe A?” he asked the chief of Tribe B. “We killed them all.” was the reply.

Actually the “indigenous” ancestors colonized the land. The all migrated from somewhere. I don’t think there’s evidence of an independent rise of human creatures all over the planet. We have no idea who murdered whom in prehistoric times. All we have is tradition and folk tales by the conquerors. History is written by the victors they say.

The anti-Columbus viewpoint is based on lies.

Recently read Admiral of the Ocean Seas, the definitive logs / accounts / histories of Columbus. A very peculiar man. Vainglorious, not really the greatest navigator at all, manipulative, and tragically xenophobic. Truly only interested in gold. But, a genius in his own way. Made big mistakes, made bold moves, got lucky, got unlucky, bloviated, sought gold, gold, gold, and kidnapped and killed for it.

Columbus Day and his canonization was an effort to make Italians feel more accepted in American culture.

Just to clarify: Columbus was never canonized. There is a movement to canonize both him and Isabella, which was headed for a while by the founder of my Alma Mater, Dr. Warren Carroll, but it hasn't happened yet.

I dont think most native Americans care...lol. White liberal virtue signaling is at play here. Creating controversy out of thin air.

Good post. We’ve been encouraged for decades to celebrate people simply for their ‘difference’, instead of their individual character.

It’s very dehumanizing.

I just celebrated Columbus Day yesterday. The joy of working in the financial industry. It’s also a federal holiday so I’m not sure what Trump would bring back.

Columbus’s huge mistake (and the reason that most kings rejected his crazy notions) was that he thought the earth was significantly smaller than what most scholars at the time believed it to be (and they weren’t that far off).

Using Marco Polo’s estimate for the distance from Italy to China, Columbus calculated that the coast of Asia was about 3 thousand miles from Spain/Portugal. Using Polo’s descriptions, he expected to find islands located off of a mainland peopled by darker-skinned people with straight black hair, little in the way of men’s beards, speaking strange languages and all kinds of exotic plants and animals.
And that’s what he found.

The great irony is that had Columbus never lived the Americas would have been discovered by accident in 1500 by Pedro Alvarez Cabral who was on his way to India and found what is now Brazil.

The Indians were doomed in either case. Stone-age people being confronted by early modern-age European civilization.

He probably means he wants to bring back the undiluted celebration and appreciation of it. Some people won’t even call it ‘Columbus Day’ anymore.

Columbus day came about after 13 (?) Italians were lynched in New Orland’s.

Years ago Anti-Catholic sentiment (Italians and Irish) was strong in the US.

Even Margaret Sanger spoke out against them.

The KKK burned crosses because they were anti-Catholic.

Of course actual canonization would never of happened. I wasn’t speaking in terms of canonization as a legal effort, or church effort. Just metaphorically
