Could DeSantis Beat Trump?
National Review ^ | January 21, 2022 | RICH LOWRY

The past and current master of the GOP sees a future threat arising.

[cut]

“It was a mistake to ever embrace Donald Trump, and now we want to be the party of Adam Kinzinger.”

[cut]

Would DeSantis be audacious enough to run against Trump in 2024? The case against waiting is that it’s extremely unlikely that the governor can maintain his exalted status in the party until 2028.

On the other hand, the case against running in 2024 is that it involves the enormous risk of encountering the business end of the Trump buzz saw, which could change DeSantis’s image in the party forever.

Three years is a long time for someone who’s currently 75. What if between now and 2024 Trump loses much of his mental ability/agility and stamina? Would Trump’s ego allow him to support DeSantis for President?

I would like for Trump to decline to run and endorse DeSantis. If however, he decides to run the smart move would be to put DeSantis on the ticket as his running mate and successor when trump completes his term.

Desantis cannot beat Trump. Not now. Not ever. Trump’s track record of accomplishments and seeing where the country is now makes that clear. He has been there and succeeded. Desantis would be a good (not great) alternative to Trump. He is still young. But if he waits to 2028, things may go cold for him. He better hope for VP.

After Biden, no one is going to elect a 78 year old man especially when biden is sent packing later this year under 25 amend.
Being 70+ will be the number one liability for any nominee.

People want a new fresh face and young. Trump had his time. Too much baggage.

Actually, I predict both parties will nominate a young white woman who will come from out of nowhere just like Trump did. Possible from the billionaire or near Mega millionaire class or a ceo, not necessarily a politician. The democrat nominee will be centrist left leaning. The Republican will be centrist right leaning.

Neither the democrat nor republicans will nominate a far left or far right candidate. That is suicide when 60% of the country is basically in the middle. They want the maximum number of votes.

No black or gay nominees this time because the American people are black and gay fatigued and the leaders know it.

Not supporting any Republican that goes against Trump, that does not explicitly denounce the steal.

Yup. The key issue is really "Are we a free country? Do our elections matter? Can we say that We The People hold any political power at all?"

I will not support any politician who is anti-Trump or who mouths platitudes about how secure the 2020 election was. For me, that results in disqualification: I will not vote for such a person.

As far as I know, DeSantis is not anti-Trump. It's not a crime to compete, but, for me, it is a crime to denigrate. Trump was good for the country. If you can't say that, then I'll look elsewhere.

Trump/DeSantis for 4 years and then DeSantis/??? for 8 more?

........

We might even get our country back on the right track with such a blessing. I think that Santis could get more done as president than Trump can because the left and the intelligence community is so against Trump. I do not think DeSantis will run for president in 2024 if Trump does. I hope DeSantis wins his re-election bid in the fall.

I really think he could. However, I don’t think either of them want it to be that way. I still predict Trump will determine the road is easier to be the kingmaker, rather than run again.

Trump’s flank on the vaxx is completely up in the air. The vaxx is perceived to be the failure it is more and more each day. The ongoing side effects of this concoction occurring in two years will most likely dissuade Trump from running at all. DeSantis could beat Trump and he might not be the only one.

Amen. Running Trump would be shooting ourselves in the foot. Desantis is the future.

desantis is up for reelection for florida governor in less than 10 months...

his attention is more than likely focused on this year (2022) not 2024...

“It was a mistake to ever embrace Donald Trump, and now we want to be the party of Adam Kinzinger.

It's kind of out-of-context for you to put that. He says no one is ever going to say that.

I wrote this elsewhere. We needed Trump in 2016...it was either Yeb! or Carson or Cruz or Trump.

We needed the grizzly bear...but he came with terrible personnel skills.

Nowadays, any milquetoast RINO NeverTrumper Presidential aspirant will get ground into mulch. They know it, which is why they're trying to be chummy with Dems. Good riddance.

I love Trump's fight. He galvanizes the troops. But nobody in the MSM will support ANY Republican...so we MUST consider his terrible HR skills IFF the competition, e.g. DeSantis, also has fangs and claw and isn't afraid to use them.

“Ron DeSantis is better than Donald Trump in every measure.”

You seem to forget that Trump accomplished a huge amount during his one term and we were well on the way out of the problems Obama handed us on his way out.

But here’s a good time to look at the needs of the country. Why put them in competition? Why not a Trump/DeSantis team, one AF1 the other AF2? Trump’s savvy with foreign nations and DeSantis’ proven domestic success would for the first time in many years, put two in a leadership role. And with some assistance, which Trump never got, use their efforts to take us back to a strength we have been losing for over 90 years. Don’t split the party, combine it. Always better with numbers. And take those that don’t want to join and allow them to leave or do what is created for their best interest and with the consent of all rather than a few. And that’s the way the Constitution works.

Shortcomings for Trump (not in my mind, but in election politics in general):
1. age
2. abrasive personality
3. clownish behavior

Shortcomings for DeSantis:
1. Ivy League lawyer
2. career politician
3. now being peddled as a Trump alternative by establishment GOP types

naw...I think it would be a great contest

Both man showing just how good they really are.

Ideally I’d like to see a Trump-DeSantis ticket in the end.
