Astronomers witness a dying star reach its explosive end

"Using two Hawaiʻi telescopes—the University of Hawaiʻi Institute for Astronomy Pan-STARRS on Haleakalā, Maui and W. M. Keck Observatory on Maunakea, Hawaiʻi Island—a team of researchers conducting the Young Supernova Experiment (YSE) transient survey observed the red supergiant during its last 130 days leading up to its deadly detonation."

""Keck was instrumental in providing direct evidence of a massive star transitioning into a supernova explosion," says senior author Raffaella Margutti, an associate professor of astronomy at UC Berkeley. "It's like watching a ticking time bomb. We've never confirmed such violent activity in a dying red supergiant star where we see it produce such a luminous emission, then collapse and combust, until now.""

Catching a stellar 130 days out of millions if not billions of years is a Big Deal.

Good Job.

The hard science is presented here,

Read the conclusions page at the end for the obligatory political pandering!

“But enough about Alec Baldwin”
The red supergiant had mass.
Baldin lacked the “m” and the “a”.

Kim Potter accidentally shoots and kills a man. Arrested, tried and convicted of 1st and 2nd degree manslaughter

Alec Baldwin accidentally shoots and kills a woman. Not even a tap on the wrist.

WHERE'S THE WOMENS EQUALITY GROUPS???

From the article, the red giant was 120 million light years away and was 10 times more massive than the sun.

In comparison, “Betelgeuse’s mass range from slightly under ten to a little over twenty times that of the Sun. For various reasons, its distance has been quite difficult to measure; current best estimates are on the order of 500–600 light-years from the Sun – a comparatively wide uncertainty for a relatively nearby star.” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Betelgeuse#:~:text=Calculations%20of%20Betelgeuse%27s%20mass%20range%20from%20slightly%20under,comparatively%20wide%20uncertainty%20for%20a%20relatively%20nearby%20star.

Puzzling. We know it’s going to happen. Going...going... going...oh never mind, here’s an artist’s impression.

No images at the Phys.org article but, an animation.
In the article there is a black and white spectrograph, along with all kinds of analysis (light years over my head!).

I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe... Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion... I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain... Time to die.

LOL

“Research at Northwestern University and CIERA is conducted on the stolen land of the Council of Three Fires, the Ojibwe, Potawatomi, and Odawa people, as well as the Menominee, Miami and Ho-Chunk nations. Research at UC Berkeley is conducted on the territory of Huichin, the ancestral and unceded land of the Chochenyo speaking Ohlone people, the successors of the sovereign Verona Band of Alameda County. Keck I/II, ATLAS, and PS1 observations were conducted on the stolen land of the kānaka ‘ōiwi people. We stand in solidarity with the Pu’uhonua o Pu’uhuluhulu Maunakea in their effort to preserve these sacred spaces for native Hawai’ians. MMT observations were conducted on the stolen land of the Tohono O’odham and Hia-Ced O’odham nations; the Ak-Chin Indian Community, and Hohokam people. ZTF observations were conducted on the stolen land of the Pauma and Cupeño tribes; the Kumeyaay Nation and the Payómkawichum (Luiseño) people. Shane 3 m observations were conducted on the stolen land of the Ohlone (Costanoans), Tamyen, and Muwekma Ohlone tribes. VLA observations were conducted on the stolen land of the Chiricahua and Mescalero Apache tribes, and the Pueblo people.”

Scientists?

I’d much rather just story the story and take their word for it than watch fake renditions... it like hey... you people are too stupid to visually conceptualize what is going on so we will make a a little movie so a 3rd grader can understand...

nothing bugs me more when it comes to interstellar reporting!
