Nice White Parents’ Responsible for Failing Public Schools, New York Times Says
The Daily Signal ^ | August 25, 2020 | Mary Clare Amselem

Why does the public education system continue to fail America’s children? Policy experts have pondered this question for decades.

Most say the answer is complicated, requiring a nuanced, collaborative approach.

But not The New York Times. It found the problem, and it’s simple: white parents.

The solution? “Try, whenever possible, to suppress the power of white parents.”

That quote comes from the Times’ podcast “Nice White Parents,” which chronicles the history of a single public school in New York. Specifically, the host, Chana Joffe-Walt, decides to look into the racial history of this school.

Her first finding: Many parents who advocated for the integration of public schools, specifically this public school, did not end up enrolling their children. Instead, they chose to send their children to established schools with a history of success. This choice—made predominantly by white families—is why the school has struggled, Joffe-Walt says.

She contacts several of these parents to scold them for not sending their children to a worse school to serve the larger cause of public education. Some parents note that although they believed in advancing school integration, they perceived this particular school to struggle academically, noting that many students could not read at grade level.

Joffe-Walt chalks up these criticisms to racism, rather than a genuine observation that the school would be a step backward academically for a student functioning at grade level.

Does she offer concrete policy solutions to fix the underlying academic issues plaguing the school? Of course not. Instead, she perpetuates the myth that parents choosing to exit the public school system leads to underfunded schools.

Yep - but one of the main reasons public schools have failed is because they have become politicized. It’s no longer about teaching kids how to read, write, perform math calculations, and become critical thinkers. It’s about kow-towing to the masses and trying to take parental responsibility away from those who didn’t want it in the first place. It’s also about trying to secure a voter base for a party who has turned victimization into a cottage industry.

True but now public school funding from the feds is tied into student attendance. The more students you have, the more money you get.

Let me help you on this one. In a way, it is correct. If whites, and particularly Asians, are attending a crappy school (i.e., any government school), they quickly realize that their kids are not being educated. Generally, they don’t know why, although they can easily find out, simply by asking any home schooler. But since home schoolers are religious nutcases, they don’t ask.

But they DO KNOW that their kids aren’t learning jack (it’s not very hard, for example, when you see your kids doing ONLY sight-words for K through 3rd grade when you know they should be learning reading by 1st grade, at the latest) - so you, as a white/Asian parent RESPOND, which means going outside of the schools to get your kids educated, as in After School Learning Centers. The kids finally learn, their scores go up, but....

...guess who gets all the CREDIT, not Slyvan or Kumon, but the public schools. So, in an indirect way, you’ve ‘helped’ the public schools raise ‘their’ test scores...and therefore, if you kids aren’t enrolled there, there’s no way those schools can take the ‘credit’ for doing such a ‘great job’.

“But the schools only get the funding as students attend. If a student attends another school, that’s where the funding goes.”

Isn’t that what’s being proposed here?

The host’s name sounds like a real SJW.

And I bet she gets compliments on the hyphen.

“The teachers are afraid of the administrators. The administrators are afraid of the politicians. The politicians are afraid of the unions. The kids are not afraid of anything. The parents are barely involved.”

It’s kind of hard to be involved in the quality of a product when you don’t even pay for it.

My understanding of the article is that the white parents are taking their kids out of these schools and finding other amenities for them. The money that would be spent in these schools is being spent wherever these kids are ending up.

A_perfect_lady : (schools )..success depends mostly on the quality of students they accept.
Even great teachers are rendered useless if they have a roomful of ignorant thugs and an administration that refuses to discipline them."

Besides strengthening the school's administration,
you have to eliminate the teacher's unions which protect inadequate teachers.
Teachers unions celebrate and protect mediocrity in the classroom, and stifle innovation.
How can you educate when your teachers are barely literate as is true in many urban schools ?
Make teaching competitive and creative, instead of learning through rote memorization, boring and over-sized classrooms, and tedious classroom instruction!

The Author is just another in a long line self loathing white millennial leftist. The worst decision a parent can make is sending a weak minded, easily manipulated child to a University.

Other than a handful of voucher programs, that simply isn’t happening in this country. The money, instead, still comes in to the schools, since it’s at gunpoint, and then schools spend it as they wish. If anything, if half of the students were to disappear tomorrow from any school district in Texas, per-pupil spending for the other half would basically double, since those districts would still be collecting their full property taxes.

If I understand school funding here schools lose their share of fed dollars when they lose enrollment.

Prop tax monies mostly go to fund retirement

“True but now public school funding from the feds is tied into student attendance. The more students you have, the more money you get.”

That is why NJ and neighboring NY are “sanctuary states”; they are willing to chase out the non-breeding American taxpayers in exchange for unemployable illegal aliens because they want the anchor babies (more specifically, the education money that comes with them). Expect a ripple effect of this to other states as the impact of the low American birthrate continues to fall...

White Dems see blacks as sources of high-paying gubmint jobs for whites with no real consequences (to the employees) for failure.

She wants white kids to be held as hostages. Not to mention NYC public school policy is blatantly anti white. The curriculum, which is too nice a word, is deeply effected by Critical Race Theory. Black kids are not disciplined at all.

You know that things are bad when a disgusting rag like the NYT continues to survive (unlike millions who died in the Holocaust that the NYT covered-up).

bs...you pay your taxes whether you use the school or not.

It's a matter of allocation.

I was homeschooled. My nice white parents could have sent me to any private school anywhere, but believed I'd get a better education through homeschooling, and with no risk of picking up a nasty bug of progressive ideas that might remain in my system for life.

I remember how the local school district people resisted the choice. They never mentioned that their students' academic performance scores hovered around 60 percent in both reading and math. Repeatedly they mentioned how financially deprived they were with every student they didn't get. Every empty seat was cash they missed.

"Do it for your community!" "If every parent thought like you, public schooling would be extinct!"

It's all about the dollars.

It’s still only about 20% or so from the feds, and far less from the state, particularly if they’re a ‘good’ school district as they’re forced to ‘contribute’ to the crappy ones, at least in Texas, and I suspect many others.

So, at 80% guaranteed funding, they’re still better off with less students. In fact, I just looked up my school district - only 5% from the feds, but 15% from the state, and 80% from property taxes. They’re getting all they need, with or without students!

Parents educating their smarter, more motivated kids by different means hurts the teacher unions, by removing the higher test scores from school averages. Test scores for the high-end kids would have been the worse for attending the bad schools, but their results are higher than those of the low end performers left behind. How awful that parents of all races care more about their children than they do the trade union.
