Sorry, I still don’t get the money flow for public schools. In my district, 80% of the public school funding is from property taxes, and while white parents may donate some money and pay for band, or whatever, that’s peanuts compared to the budget numbers we’re talking about (right at $15,000 per student, per year - so the school district gets to still keep $12k if my kid doesn’t go there).
The article seems an attack on white, middle-class parents — but really, its a vicious attack on minorities, particularly blacks.
The thrust of the article is that white people are what make schools good. When they leave, they take money and parental commitment - schools fail, and thus, blacks are incapable of creating good schools.

Maybe the folks at the New York Times should set their sights on changing human nature. DNA adjustments might be necessary, like that cow who had been genetically designed to want to have her liver eaten; I think it was in The Restaurant at the End of the Universe.

I don't suppose it occurred to anyone to concentrate their efforts on the parents and students who were less successful--and not on those determined to succeed and expecting excellence, or even adequacy--rather than lowering everyone's standards. Of course the challenge is enormous, the solution difficult, but that's where the problem is.
For $23,000 per student per year, a 1:3 teacher:student ratio could easily be established, maybe a smaller ratio. Having a bunch of motivated, disciplined, success-driven white children sitting in the classroom is a better plan than that?

Well, there's one problem that could be eliminated.

At first I never believed this, but I’ve actually met people who DO it. Instead of guaranteeing their kids a higher-level education, they think it’s their civic duty to support the public school system — the “community”. (They aren’t conservatives, in case you were wondering.)

In any sane world, saying that only white parents care about their kids would be considered racist.
My city taxes seem to go to the city schools whether or not I have children to send to them. Its one of the main gripes of retirees on a fixed income, and, generally speaking, its why they vote no to many of the referendums.
The woman can make all the corollaries she wants, but she fails to identify cause.
The fact that “white” parents who advocated for integrated schools did not send their kids to the integrated schools cannot have been the cause of the failures of the schools.
Just two facts dispute her claim - a claim that is essentially that black children NEED classrooms with “white” kids. (1) Thomas Sowell wrote eloquently many years ago about his study of the segregated mostly black schools in Washington D.C., in the 1950s, before the famous Supreme Court school integration case. The black students were then performing at or above national performance averages. (2) Some of the best private high schools blacks can attend in the South were and are high schools established just for blacks. Yes, they began before integration but some continued after integration. Why? The parents wanted them, because they had high performance standards and the teachers did not coddle the students but demanded they perform as well as they were capable of.
If you want to find causes for both poor “black” school performance and a corollary that follows that - lower incomes - you need look no further than the decline of the black family (marriage & parents that stay together), the increase in underage & unwed mothers among blacks, the increase in single-parent female head of household families among blacks, all which began their bad trends in the 1960s during Lyndon Johnson’s “great society” era. Those same trends were not found in the American black family going all the back before the 1960s to the 1800s, and neither were the current black crime rates.
Yes, integration - kids getting to know “other” & “different” kids is a good “social” thing (it does, due to familiarity, lower the reliance on stereotypes and their related prejudices), BUT academic performance does not REQUIRE it. Academic performance needs good teachers, diligent students willing to put their nose to the grindstone and parents who support their kids in that effort. At the end of the day, any student is capable of defeating the best efforts of teachers and students AND any student is capable of overcoming some deficits of their teachers and parents.
BUT it is known, regardless of ethic background, when the family is not whole and not a nuclear family, kids, statistically, do not perform as well in school, and develop other social problems.
Blacks today are not so much, the “victims” of “continued racism” as much as they are, statistically, the result of the extreme decline of the black family as a social unit, a whole unit with both parents, parents who stay together. Yes, individuals can overcome those deficits, and many do, but statistics & averages are not about individuals who beat the odds, just what happens among a group.
Black Kids physically attack white kids in public school every single day in this country.
Refusal to acknowledge this is fraud.
A real double-dipper as she also works or worked for NPR & Planet Money. Shockingly, she is a 2003 Oberlin College graduate. Seems to be incapable of being right about anything!

An Ivy League educrat has already said this (and Germany already does it). The Ivy Leaguer HATED that a child may be taught religious lessons in the home.
It’s going to get much worse in the next few years because there’s been no classroom instruction. Many kids have refused to do on line classes, even though they were given free computers and free internet. They have been promoted to the next grade level even though they are below last year’s grade level and may not even be able to read.
So there will be two groups of kids in the next few years: one group will be above grade level and the other group will illiterate and innumerate. The latter will not be employable. Expect to have more riots from the latter group.
Yes, but many teachers will get the smart students to teach the slower students. What are teachers supposed to do if there aren’t enough smart students in their classes?
This is problematic, according to Nice White Parents, because a French program strays from the cultural needs of the majority-minority population of the school.
So they want the white kids to stay, but they dont want to teach them things that would be helpful to them. And the parents should shut the heck up.
