Mr. Jones: Movie Depicts When The New York Times Helped Stalin Cancel 10 Million

You’ve probably never heard of Gareth Jones.

You’ve certainly heard of the writer he inspired, and the classic dystopian novel that writer created. You were forced to read it, or at least the Cliff’s Notes, in high school. But shorn of its context, that novel lacks the full punch it could deliver. Mr. Jones (2019), starring Peter Sarsgaard and James Norton, directed by Oscar nominee Agnieszka Holland and written by Andrea Chalupa, provides that context in a must-see film. Mr. Jones is powerfully relevant today, even more than when it premiered in 2019.

Mr. Jones tells the true story of speaking real truth to actual power, be it a government or an all-powerful newspaper. Gareth Jones (Norton) was a young idealistic Welsh journalist who wanted to interview Stalin, whom many in the West regarded as a savior of mankind. That’s not an exaggeration. In 1933, when Mr. Jones takes place, both Hitler and Stalin were widely regarded as men who were delivering the future: socialism. Collectivism. The new man as global citizen. They had the intelligentsia’s ear from Paris to London to Washington and Hollywood and points between.

Murdered, no doubt, under Stalin’s orders. The dirty deed was done in China. It is not well known but Stalin wanted John Wayne murdered. Fortunately Stalin died shortly after he ordered Wayne dead.

I must see this movie — Mr. Jones is the man who gives George Orwell the information and insight from what Mr. Jones saw himself in the Ukraine that Orwell used to write Animal Farm. Amazing story.

Finally! Somebody made a film even related to the topic. Walter Durant is one of history’s great villains. He was Stalin’s American apologist and propagandist. He helped cover up the Holodomor. He was awarded a Pulitzer Prize which the NY Times has never repudiated.

It’s decades past time a feature length film was made about this evil scumbag and his Leftist enablers.

Mr. Jones is a warning from the past and a harbinger of the future if cancel culture is not, itself, canceled.

Interesting review...

Not to horn in on this movie, but another good story along these lines is a book called Coming Out if the Ice: An Unexpected Life by Victor Herman. It’s a true story about an idealistic Detroit autoworker who moved with his family to the USSR in the 30s to work in the Ford Plant. The story is an autobiography by the son of the life he endured under Stalin and his eventual harrowing escape. I attended a lecture by Mr, Herman in Southfield, Michigan in the 70s. He was in poor health and quite frail, he delivered his lecture while seated but his mind was sharp, recalling every vivid detail of his life under the Stalin regime. It was powerful; he had the audience on the edge of their seats the entire time and I can still recall a lot of it. I bought the book at the time and couldn’t put it down. They have it on Amazon on MP3 CD and audiobook I believe. There are apparently hardcovers and paperbacks but the prices listed are around $900!!! I don’t know what that’s about. There was no share button but you can look it up and read the description. It’s not the kind of book the liberal establishment elite would want out there in this neo-Stalinist era and I’m surprised Amazon still sells it. I’ll bet they won’t have it for long.

That was made into a TV movie in the 80’s, with John Savage as Herman, and Willie Nelson as a fellow zek in the Gulag. Another great source on Americans who went to the USSR in the 30’s and got swallowed up in the purges is THE FORSAKEN by Tim Tzouliadis. It’s riveting.

“prices listed are around $900!!! I don’t know what that’s about.”

“It’s not the kind of book the liberal establishment elite would want out there in this neo-Stalinist era”

You actually answered your own question. They artificially inflate the price to keep us lowly Kulaks from buying the books.
