More than half a century ago a fellow grad student invited me into his laboratory to show me his doctoral research. He introduced me to the science of animal reflexes. A novel stimulus induces in an animal, however briefly, a freeze reaction. This is called an orienting reflex. What happens next depends on the animals response to the potential threat. If the novel stimulus does not seem to be a threat the animal gradually relaxes. Repeats of this type of stimulus gradually habituate its orienting reflex so that the animal, in effect, learns to ignore this particular stimulus.
On the other hand, in the case of a real threat, the animal can only respond in one of two ways: It can freeze for an extended length of time or it can panic and run to escape.
Humans, too, experience the orienting freeze reflex to novel stimuli. If the stimulus is a threat, a person may freeze in place for a substantial time, or the person may flee in panic. Or, and this is what makes humans different from all animals, some people may become coldly rational and plan out, and execute, an appropriate course of action. Training, especially, helps create this rational response.
The important thing to note is that the orienting reflex is so essential to survival that it evolved very early in the history of life. Its creation was back so deep in time that we share the orienting reflex with insects, with spiders, and with even more primitive creatures.
Society emulates an organism. An animal is a collection of functioning elements, all working in cooperation. It is useful to consider a society, such as America, as a kind of organism analogous to an animal.

What pandemic? This is a nothingburger. There, in before the flubros!
“It is useful to consider a society, such as America...”
The US is actually a mixture of first, second and third world societies, and everything in between. The only two things we have in common are a mostly common language and an overarching constitution.
“Killing Off a Pandemic is Engineering, Not ‘Science’”
Yesterday, the “experts” told us, whoops, it’s not easy after all to catch Capt. Trips from surface areas.
I also notwe that one of the very first things Tuna Nan and our domestic enemies told us was, “We MUST listen to the scientists.”
Perfect is the enemy of the good.
From: Difference Between Science and Engineering | Difference Between
"Science is defined as the branch of knowledge or the study that deals with a systematically arranged body of truths or facts which can be logically and rationally explained. It is knowledge of the physical and material world that is derived from one's observation and experimentation."
"Engineering, which is the discipline of gaining and using scientific, mathematical, economic, social, and practical knowledge to design and build machines, devices, and structures to improve the lives of the people."
What is being done in so many instances, whether climate change or ChiCom flu, is that science is being confused with social engineering. Progressives call social engineering science. That's what happens when people get degrees in social 'sciences' and xyz Studies. Whatever they studied becomes the center of the universe and can solve all the world's problems. That's a load of bunk.
Real scientists publish, keep their pie holes shut and let real engineers apply science.
So the next time you are called a science denier, rip that progressive a new one. Call him/her out for not knowing the difference between science and engineering. Hold that target still, abuse, degrade, and ridicule. Alinsky rules for radicals. Fight fire with fire.

Needs repeating.
Just remember to utilize the leverage of crowds and the efficiency of lampposts multiplied by an ample coefficient of cold fury.
Blindly lapping up the results of un-validated computer simulations is not Science!
Well this old windbag is dead wrong.
There are many cases of people on death’s door who survived and felt back to normal within a couple of days.
Actually, real scientists use their knowledge to develop new drugs, vaccines, medical devices, and treatment protocols. An engineer is not going to create a library of chemical compounds to screen as potential drugs against pesticide poisoning, but an organic chemist--a scientist--routinely does such work.
Most new products developed through the scientific method require people from a range of disciplines.
The author of this piece is wrong. I doubt there are many engineers working behind the scenes to analyze courses of action, efficacy of control measures, etc. That's the work of scientists and mathematicians.
You are correct. Engineering also uses the scientific method and many different disciplines. The original statement would be more correct if it said theoretical scientists. Most of the models are coming from universities where the people building the models are not engineering any product other than social change. May I add, a lot of the people building those models are cross-discipline people that have little rigor to their disciplines.
