One thought on this is that if there some way that a certain few people might have been put in solitary confinement right after the election....then much(or most) of this might never have happened. Just a thought.

The world is full of coincidences. Audits and closures threaten rice-bowls, now globally-connected, hence the Never Trumpers (in)actions.

What about the obvious and most likely way - Surveil a foreign target with the intent of understanding what our adversary is doing and incidentally pick up a call from an American?
The President can direct Surveillance to take place without a FISA court involvement.
It took 90 seconds of research to find out that this can only happen if the Attorney General certifies that the communications will be exclusively between foreign nationals and the AG notifies both the House and Senate in advance.
If it happened the AG lied and the Republicans on the intelligence committees who knew about it are staying quiet.
It's a great talk radio story, however.
