Surgeon General Jerome Adams Tuesday doubled down on his advice against healthy people wearing face masks to protect themselves from coronavirus, saying that wearing one improperly can "actually increase your risk" of getting the disease.

Then, there is the problem with beards and no metal nose strip.
............
That causes a bad seal, air flows right around the mask.
............
When that beard gets hot, the wearer scratches and skin flakes that now have collected viruses, break off and fall to the ground or on clothing, for us to walk on and spread contamination.

My 3M N95 mask directions say you must shave everyday or the mask may not be effective.

No. He is right. People wearing masks are more likely to mess with them meaning they touch their face more often. The masks are not effective at filtering the virus but may provide a false sense of security when coughing or sneezing. In addition. if not discarded or washed frequently the become loaded with bacteria and viruses. they do nothing to control the spread of the disease

Isn't it interesting that on 3/31/2020 the Surgeon General states that it is not a good idea for healthy people to wear masks and now we have too!

Should have read the entire article. Last line: "There may be a day where we change our recommendation, particularly for areas that have large spread going on, about wearing cotton masks but again the data is not there yet," said Adams.

You think maybe things have changed over the past month? Like over 1 million more diagnosed cases and 63,000 more deaths?

right. the mask is made of a magical one way material that while. it preventing the virus from getting to you prevents the virus from getting from you to the outside world. Do you see what a steaming pile the authorities are selling?

Absolutely. Most Corona virus victims show no outword symptoms. To me, that means that you could spread the disease even though you think you are healthy. Decide what makes you comfortable and go with that.

...The example he gave ... if you scaled a corona virus up to 1inch x 1 inch and scaled the holes in a bandana, T-shirt, some of the other non-N95 masks to an equivalent scale to the virus, the hole would be 83 feet x 83 feet. How many 1” x 1” ‘viruses’ could fit through that hole? More than a few ....

The problem with this reasoning is two-fold:

1. A viable bare-naked virus particle is almost never floating around in air. It gets dried out and dies rapidly. The virus is in a water (or maybe snot) particle in the air. These particles are large enough for the N95 mask to take them out.

2. The actual size of a viable virus particle is much larger than an electron microscope measures. Electron microscopes only work while the samples being investigated are in a hard vacuum. This is necessary for the electron beam. Electrons traveling through air are commonly called sparks or lightning. This vacuum dries out the water that is usually associated with a virus and shrivels it up. Think about a raisin vs. the grape that it came from. Or even better, take the raisin and dry it out further in your oven, until it is just a tiny hard speck. Then we measure this size and call it the size of the virus. No, it is the size of the shriveled, dried up virus. The live virus is much larger.

so the mask is made of a magical substance that only lets the virus through one way? please.

You’re right to suggest that the Nurses aren’t being well protected by the surgical masks (vs. 95). They are still protecting patients and co-workers though.

The medical establishment mislead us about masks — motivated by the need to ensure a supply for medical workers. We were supposed to believe that masks are useless — unless you’re a health-care worker; in which case, they’re absolutely essential and life-saving.

Next, we’re supposed to believe that we’re all too stupid to wear a mask properly — as if it takes years of study to learn the trick. N-95 masks do need to be fitted properly; but, anyone who can’t wear a surgical mask properly shouldn’t be allowed to drive a car.

When it was believed that the virus only spread from touching surfaces; the health officials had a point about masks. We’ve known for several weeks now that the CCP virus spreads as an aerosol, and it’s likely even airborne. Masks do help prevent the spread by those means.

We also know that asymptomatic people can spread the disease. If you haven’t been tested, or if you haven’t recovered from the disease; you should assume you have it and are a carrier. Civic-minded people (which, I still hope describes the majority of FReepers) will wear a mask to protect everyone around them.

and likely not even then. But. at least in the hospital they are combined with face shields and often negative pressure air flow

Until now, I didn’t realize how little I touched my face, before.
Since Hogan’s Mask Command, I find myself pawing at my face all the time, trying to keep the damn thing up, take it off, put it on, etc etc etc.

If one coughs, or even respires heavily (running, shouting); the virus is spread far and wide. If one is wearing a mask, it doesn’t spread as far. Mask wearing is like covering your face with a tissue when you sneeze or cough. No magic required.

USA (little mask-wearing) Deaths/million = 204
Taiwan (mask-wearing) Deaths/million = 0.3
S.Korea (mask-wearing) Deaths/million = 5.0
Japan (mask-wearing) Deaths/million = 4.0

People are making fashion masks. Useless.

I noticed when I shop that about half of the people are wearing masks. There is a real unfriendliness about it... kind of like we view each other as enemies.

This all becomes little more than tiresome noise.

Wear masks. No don’t. Be more safe. No you’ll be more at
risk.

Nonsense.

Vietnam (mask wearing), literally one country away from China, where the breakout started.

Everyone here has worn a mask, for three months now. They have been legally required now for everyone in public, for two entire months.

Deaths/million = zero.

The country is now opening back up.
