The mask is not supposed to catch a single virus. It’s supposed to catch droplets that include the virus.

He is exactly correct.

Wearing a mask INCREASES the chance of getting the virus.

People wearing masks touch their face 5 times more often than people who do not. Most people constantly readjust their mask. Touching surfaces (counters, handles, windows, railings, etc) and then bringing whatever is on your fingers to your face is the best way to get the virus. Masks only increase the amount of touching of your face, therefore increasing the risk.

...

Thanks for the explanation.

I wear N-95s and respirators for jobs that I do all the time.

You're correct - it takes a very long time [easily weeks] to learn to just slap them on and leave them alone for the rest of the time they're on your face.

Yes..quite possibly. I've seen FIT tests that were jokes..And folks not wearing them right....

The hospital I used to work at..

My friend is the Pulm. Doc. He told me they turned a floor ( 16 rooms...) into a "19" floor...Neg. "P" rooms....

The Hosp. is in a town of 35k...

I sometimes work in a rural Hosp. that has 15-16 beds...We are taking precautions...but have had zero "19" patients...come thru.

Stay safe!

USA (little mask-wearing) Deaths/million = 204
Taiwan (mask-wearing) Deaths/million = 0.3
S.Korea (mask-wearing) Deaths/million = 5.0
Japan (mask-wearing) Deaths/million = 4.0

Those numbers are simply made up lies, I tell you, by some second class person without one iota of professional training or expertise. What are numbers when compared to the intellect of a superior mind trained for years by the most prestigious FDA approved medical school imaginable. You simply are unable to comprehend the enormity of such complex matters. Numbers are for the simple minded incapable of linear thought processes required for critical analysis. Do you think just because you own a calculator you actually have the wherewithal to derive any meaningful data from your silly and primitive math?

Who made you an MD? Where's your state certified medical license? You should be ostracized and drummed out of the galaxy. Where is your patriotism, not to mention pride in having just been spoken to by someone of a much higher intellect. How dare you second guess those who put their lives on the line daily every second of every day. How dare you degenerate our far superior medical experts by comparing us with your silly numbers to Asia. How selfish and self-serving!!! Blah, blah, blah...

LOL, but I honestly believe this is the level of what you may expect when presenting some here with even the simplest of facts. But they bear repeating, and I'm completely on your side on this issue...:)

wearing one improperly can "actually increase your risk" of getting the disease.

Is he an idiot?

He's a liar

I'll wear a face mask when they stop allowing the use of paper money.

There's one reason they never bring up the transfer of germs from paper money...Illegals spend cash...lots of cash.

Don't think for one minute they haven't already discussed it. But you haven't heard one word about how handling money transfers germs.

Vietnam (mask wearing), literally one country away from China, where the breakout started.

But China also falls into the category of mask wearing countries.

It seems like you like to think about the math behind things.

If the apparent success of mask wearing to reduce the deaths per million people in a country results from the effects of the mask then it seems like the most likely place for COVID-19 infections to be transmitted is outside, on the street or in a mass transit vehicle. And not in meetings, dinners at restaurants, bars, church services, or many other public events. Because people in mask wearing countries, prior to the widespread response to COVID-19 did not wear masks in many social circumstances.

The change in behavior to nearly constant mask wearing, and other social distancing measures did not start until after the outbreaks were under way. And in several of the countries listed the outbreaks never really got underway, but remained small enough for contract tracing and isolation to be used to quell the epidemic.

Worldwide some of the situations where the epidemic spread most rapidly were situations like the dinner party in Connecticut, or the Biogen meeting in Boston, or a restaurant in China where people would not have been wearing masks in any country.

Masks should make a difference in viral transmission rates, and for high end masks they should make a big difference but it is hard to match up the known locations of viral spreading with the effects of wearing masks on the street or in public transit vehicles.

Yes, and even though it started in China, they are now, basically over it.

Masks, are a big reason.

Everyone there is wearing masks.

Haha.

I actually have money I got new from the bank two months ago. 1, 2, 5 and 10.

Not a lot, but for exactly that reason.

No he is correct. Not having enough disposable masks and not properly sterilizing cloth masks also increases your risks

Masks are not as effective as proper hygiene. Wash your candy. Cover your cough. Don’t spit on the sidewalk. Wash your damn hands

No. They wear N95 masks not the crap you see people wearing around town. Moreover they wear a mask to prevent anything they might be carrying from making a patient worse

"There was a study in 2015 looking at medical students. And medical students wearing surgical masks touch their faces on average 23 times. We know a major way that you can get respiratory diseases like coronavirus is by touching a surface and then touching your face."

That my friend, is simply absurd. YOU DO NOT CATCH a VIRUS BY TOUCHING YOUR FACE! That people evidently believe that you do is sad. The only touching that can infect you is by putting objects that have the virus on them that causes COVID into entrance into your body, like into your mouth. Which a mask actually works against!
