First US Doctors to Analyze Coronavirus Patients’ Lungs Say It Could Lead to Quicker Diagnosis

The first U.S. doctors to analyze a COVID-19 coronavirus patients’ lungs said they were able to identify patterns in the lungs as indicators of the disease as it progressed over time.

Doctors at New York City’s Mount Sinai hospital became the first in the nation to use CT scans on patients from China with COVID-19, they said in a statement on Wednesday, publishing their findings in “Radiology.” The new findings could result in a quicker diagnosis in patients who arrive with potential symptoms of the mysterious new virus.

The team received CT scans of 94 patients from China, where the virus is believed to have originated last year. Most of the patients who were admitted in hospitals between Jan. 18 and Feb. 2 had been to the virus’s epicenter in Wuhan or had contact with an infected person.

Doctors noted that in 36 patients who had CT scans zero to two days within reporting symptoms, more than half had no evidence of any lung disease. Another 33 patients who received CT scans three to five days after they showed symptoms had patterns of “ground-glass opacities” that became more round and dense in their lungs, the team said. And in another 25 patients who had CT scans between six and 12 days after they reported symptoms, a “fully involved lung disease” was noted by the doctors.

“Patterns seen in these images are similar to patterns in related coronavirus outbreaks earlier this century, including SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) and MERS (Middle East respiratory syndrome),” said the doctors in a press release.

I was supposed to go into surgery about 10 years ago but some foreign intern found a lump on my lung in the X-ray. So they canceled the surgery and I went to my primary doctor and he took an x-ray. He said the one from the hospital just had some kind of Shadow on it and there was nothing there.

Subsequent tests proved there was nothing there

My dad nearly died during lung surgery for a lump they saw on his x-ray. They misread his x-ray and the surgery was unnecessary.

His doctor probably needed the work for billings.

Had a similar experience more than 30 years ago: very suspicious looking lump on my lungs found in an x-ray in a routine company physical. I had a young family with three small children then. Went out an bought a big life insurance policy just in case. It was cheap.

Subsequent tests proved there was nothing there.

Wasted my money on the insurance policy. But a man's got to do what a man's got to do, right?

I did not expect a bunch of responses about other X rays being misread!

My stomach doctor rocks and is my primary too.

I pay Specialist fee to see him as primary (45 instead of 10) but it’s worth it.

He’s not paesan but I’m good with that :)

They didn’t even run a CAT scan on your pop?

If you have to wait until there is an actual pneumonitis (as characterized by the ground glass appearance on CT scan), it may be too late for remdesivir or other anti-viral medications to do much good. Need a quicker mass diagnostic test and a vaccine. Yet still doubt this virus will cause severe illness in the Caucasian and African populations. Suspect there will be an outbreak in Chinatown and other areas with a high concentration of Asians in the US.

From what I understand, it is likely that the Everett, WA, patient had significant lung abnormality by the time remdesivir was used, yet it still proved effective.
